Here is the update of where I am in fixing the wing pockets and a question. A little unsure of fiberglassing and thinking I only had one post that was broken I took it to a auto shop that does fiberglass. The owner a friend inspected all and found the front two were broken as well (about half way down the tube). After some research he was uncomfortable and I took it back. After talking to some guys (Drew Riddle in San Antonio H17 sailor was a big help) I felt I could tackle the project. I ran a piece of PVC down the hole to align the two pieces and to give some backing while glassing. I did both back post as they had inspection ports in place. I was very pleased with the fix and while the second one was a bit messier on my arm they should hold for years. Now the mistake. I looked threw the middle inspection/storage hole and could see the post. It "appeared" the dagger box was well behind the wing hole. So out comes the hole saw and I put a perfect 2" hole right on top of the springs in the dagger box. I realize in my haste to be close to the post and behind the crossbar that this was a bad choice. Now my question before I drill again. Is 2-3" in front of the cross bar the right place to put an inspection hole? While I'm very happy with my first work with fiberglass its because its inside and no one will see. I'll have to get my friend to fix the small hole but it won't be a big problem, I just don't want another un-needed hole. Thanks Drew |

Another questions on wings. One of the tubes had the cap at the bottom of the hole. I was able to get it out. My friend Drew said his 17 has redwood inside the tubes of the wing. Mine were empty. Is there suppose to be wood in the tube to help keep them from collapsing? Is it a counter sunk rivet? If so what size? Thanks Again |

Yes, later models included a block of wood to help distribute the loads placed on the wing leg as it exits the deck. It is placed at 45 degrees inside the tube so the edge supports against the aluminum to help keep it from kinking. The block is 1.25" square by 6" long. Counter sunk rivet for the cap is 8010051 RIVET 4-8 CSK ALUM |

Thanks for the info on the wood and rivet. Is the spot right in front of the cross bar the place for a deck plate to fix the internal wing tube? Thanks Drew |

I installed my forward access ports under my deck on the inside of the hull near the deck lip about 7" behind the front cross bar on center.This is well above the water line.That ends up directly lined up with those wing sockets. My arm was able to reach the entire wing socket and foot area.I installed the aft access ports on the center-line of the deck surface about 13.5" from the center line of the rear cross bar.The access port size I used was 5" diameter and contoured to fit that curved surface.Buy black because white will yellow over time.
