I am looking to upgrade my original main halyard on my 21SE.This 22 year old line is still in fine shape, but I want something more current.Perhaps a line that does not absorb water and very little stretch. The line guide calls for 1/4" Halyard X 68'.
Thanks,Bill 404 :D

Since the halyards only function is to hoist, but not hold, the sail up... why replace? I think comfort in your hands is the biggest factor if you do replace.

It seem my old line stretches and makes engaging that hook at the top of my mast sometimes difficult...
I still use my original main sheet too and would like to upgrade that line too.Like my halyard, this line absorbs water too.
Just looking for some advice...

I use 3/16" Yale Light with a clamcleat tug-cleat that stays tied to the end. The tug-cleat comes in handy when raising and lowering the sail on the water. Any non-stretch line will work.

You boat probably has the flapper like mine. Tie a simple overhand stop knot on the end of the line, that holds a single half-hitch on the halyard ring. Before hooking the shackle to the sail, let it hang freely for a few seconds until any twists come out and it hangs still. Put 3 or 4 twists in the line that cause the ring to rotate back to the side of the mast that the hook is on the top of the mast, then fasten the shackle to the sail with the stopper knot and half hitch on the side of the mast away from the hook. Then all you have to do is pull the sail up and when you see the little flapper raise up, stop pulling and it will drop right on the hook.

The jaws of the sail feeder should be together close enough that the sail will just go in with no extra space. Sometime you have to squeeze the feeder jaws together a bit. Make sure there are no meat hooks on the screws holding the feeder in the sail track, or they can tear the sail. If there are "meat hooks" from a bit too much torque screwing them in, replace the screws using a properly fitting screwdriver with sealant of course.

These details will allow you to pull the sail up without having to rotate the mast, hand feed the sail, or any other such foolishness.

When I raise the sail on the beach, I hook it up as stated, grab the tug cleat and just walk backwards. If you want to play with batten tension on the water, this allows you to do that too. I use the very same system on 17's and 18's.

Thanks Tom for your insight,I do not have that flapper on my 21SE but a hook.I will order new line tomorrow.Again thanks for an excuse to spend money on my boat.
This year had been good at work $$ and now I feel that new sails will be in the near future (after my daughter gets a nice clothing allowance). Now the question ,do I first replace my 21SE sails or my 16 sails or? maybe a new spinnaker set up on my 21.I have never used a spinnaker pole but like the idea of it.
Other sailors have approached me inquiring if my 21 is available for sale. The monies they have offer is what I paid for my 21 back in '89.My kids always say No Way ...but sometimes I think that a new Wildcat would be nice....

But I am only a weekend sailors that like to travel to regattas just for fun so I always leave with a smile and feel just fine with that attitude...

Without the flapper it will work the same way. You just have to rotate the mast so the hook turns away from the ring to lower the sail.

hey Bill 404 its Ted 378 I am in the process of trying to find new set of sails for my 21se trying to deside between dacron, colored dacron, or pentex and then which sailmaker,
lots of variables and not sure how much performance is to be gained verses longevity, and i like the idea of lots of color after all its a beachcat. since the boat is new to me and no experience with it what are your criteria in your selection process.
Ted
