I have a 21SE and hae carried 6 adults and 3 kids kind of close though
I would advise getting rid of the people you do not really like and some of the whiney kids

I'm in the decision between the H21 SC and the Getaway. I have read a prior post of one vs the other, but my question is more specific to the max load. Hobie specs list Getaway at 1000# max load but I cannot find any data for H21...the capacity should be about the same for both SE and SC versions (?) I've read a post that someone got 19 people onboard (mostly kids)...i had a Ferris Bueller moment...."Nine Times??"....NineTEEN? wow. I'd like to get: 3-4 on leeward tramp, 3-4 on windward wings, 2-3 kids and 1 adult on front tramp...plus me...so 10 adults ave 175#, 3 kids ave 50# = about twice the Getaway's max load. I've seen a youtube of an SC with 7 adults on the main tramp open water, and the hulls looked like a couple more and a few kids up front wouldn't have hurt anything. I wouldn't load up like that outside of protected water though... I'll be keeping on a lakeshore behind a relative's house, so all rigging stays up, and I figure I can rig a winch to a tree or use the main sheet to pull it up, so i'm not too worried about pulling it up a beach by myself. The plan is to eventually take to NW FL to do some cruise/camping... I figure for a 50% increase in weight, you get 27% increase in length, 13% beam, and i roughly figure around 30% more deck space....I'd wonder if 10 adults, somewhere around 1750-2000# would hold steady. What's the max you've put on, and how did she like it? |

thanks for the reply! I love the roomyness of the H21's decks and the storage center...but since the hulls appear to be more 'racing' rather than the Getaway's 'bulk carrier' design, i'm concerned if the total weight capacity is no better than Getaway... 21 seems like such a classic cat, makes me want to cruise and camp... |

The entire time i stood there listening to the guy selling me my 21-SE as he's saying how he passed water-skiers with this Baby up in Eureka, ---I'm thinking : " OK i'll place the polls for my Bimini Top where those holes are that hold the wings. I want removable netting from the bow to the front cross-bar, so i can sleep while the beech-wheels hold me over the water at night. This will be SO so FUN !!! THEN The next day i'll go kite-boarding in the am: then leave all that stuff on the beach, and do a broad-reach across the 4 mile wide lake, in the afternoon while it's Blowing 25+ ; as it usually does !!!!!!! Can't hardly wait to see how long it takes for a ,(21-SE) to get to the other side & back ? What do Ya think with No camp gear on board ? Bille |

It really is a great boat we had 7 adults out on a sunset cruise one night in very light winds we were moving right along. I forgot we allso had capt.morgan along so it was a very boisterous event. any ways the boat will carry some peoples. Good Luck! |

I've had 5 adults and a few kids on board and the boat still handled well. Last weekend, we headed out for the weekend with my wife and myself, 2 Thule soft bags loaded with food and camping gear on the forward tramp, a carbon fibre guitar on stb wing, a large sports bag on the port wing and liquids and other gear in the hulls. Still managed 16 knots with no problem at all. Remember however, that the wings can only support 550 lbs so watch your weight when sitting on the wings. The only downfall of the boat is the weight. Getting it to and from the water can be a grind with only 2, hence my thoughts of maybe selling her and building an i550. Its been an awesome boat, loads of room, done some really long trips on her and she's never let me down. |

Hobie specs say 500# limit on the wings. I had 11 on mine, motoring out to watch fireworks this year, which was perfectly fine. There's a standard for estimating the safe capacity of a boat. I think the formula is length x beam / 15...which gives us 13. I seem to recall that the formula assumes 150 average weight per person. As much as anything, it depends on conditions and the skills of all aboard. |
