Post subject:  Checking the i12 as luggage?

I've got one of the original Mirage Outback's (5 years old) that I fish out of, but I occasionally fly in to fish and I like the idea of being able to travel with the i12 instead of the hassle of renting a kayak once I arrive.

So I'm thinking of the i12 as my "travel yak."

Any of you guys ever check your inflatable? Is it too big to check? Any extra fees apply?

Thanks,

Craig

i've not had any experiences checking one in, however take a look at the i9. its a lot of boat for a 9 footer and would be much easier to travel with.

The i12s is definitely going to be over 50lbs. And it's a pretty big roller case.

Base on my experience with them, I'm not sure that I'd want the knuckleheads at American or Delta touching a Mirage Inflatable.

the I9 does pack nice. I'd have my mirage drive and paddle, pump, in a suit case on its own.

Thanks for the quick replies, I'll take a look at the i9.

Our guys have traveled with all of the inflatables including the i14 and the i12. They had no problems. One of the engineers has been to Cabo San Lucas several times now with them.

I've flown with the i14 a couple of times.

A few hints:

Buy a plastic tarp, and wrap the boat in it before placing in the wheeled stuff bag.

Apply duct tape to the top and bottom edges and corners of the bag. It'll look like hell, but it will avoid friction burn-throughs from the conveyor systems.

The bag will take a beating, but with these extra measures of protection, I've avoided damage to the boat. On my first trip, I went "naked" and did have an abrasion on the boat. In my view, the bag could use just a bit more engineering, or tougher materials, on the perimeter edges...but it'll work.

The actual rolling works well. On JetBlue, they have a flat $75 policy (if I remember correctly) for "windsurfers"...which saves a little on the $50 for oversize, plus $50 for overweight, that you'll pay otherwise.

Cheers, J
