Post subject:  New Hobie i14T with a sail - Question

Hello everyone!
We just purchased an i14T with a sail and the turbo fins.
The experience was great, but I have one question:
The mast seemed to lean too easily... wind was a little strong, but even on the softer periods, the lean was a little too much.
Any advice on how to tighten the stays or any other suggestions?
Thanks!!!

There is some natural "give" because of the flexible nature of the inflatables. You may also be experiencing a bit shroud stretching. You can pre-tension them somewhat, but it is normal for the mast to be a little sloppy. They're not going to win a lot of sailing races, but they still give a nice boost to pedaling! 8)

Thanks for your reply Roadrunner!
One more question: is there any advice on how tight the shrouds should be? Or on the type of know to tie it, so you can tighten it during the use?

I'd put no more than about 5 or 10 pounds of tension on them so you place a high static load on the fittings. Making sure you've got the hull nicely inflated also helps minimize flex.

You can use slip knots to tie the shrouds, but I've also seem some small quick release devices like shroud mounted cleats -- just don't remember where. Perhaps you can inquire at a Marine hardware or peruse the West Marine catalog. 8)

When I've been out sailing the i14T a couple of times and the wind picked up, one of the stays snaps off from the hull. I've never been sure if the that was by design, in order not to put too much pressure on where it connects to the hull, or if it is ok to replace it with something stronger (e.g., a cleat). Did anybody experience any problems after replacing or reinforcing the stays? If that's not a concern, I will definitely replace as that allows the sail to operate on stronger winds (probably still quite stable).

Thanks!

Like Pesan, one of my shrouds snapped off while sailing in moderate winds today. Nothing broke but the plastic hook-cleat just unsnapped. I had to pull in the mast and roll up the sail and peddle into shore. This is going to make me nervous about going out in anything but light-moderate winds. Any suggestions?

I was also sailing my i14 for the first time this weekend in higher winds.
Twice the plastic snap became undone.
I had to take down the sail and paddle to shore.

is this unsnapping by design (in high winds under stress)?
or should i go out and buy alternative clips/carabiners to attach the stays to the hull cleat?

I suspect these hooks are designed to fail so that excessive winds don't rip out the padeye. They are easy enough to re-hook without damage (unlike a failed padeye). Hobie deliberately engineers "sacrificial" points that are relatively painless to replace. Other examples that come to mind are rudder pins (all boats) and brace retainer clips (Adventure and Tandem Island). 8)
