Post subject:  turbofins for sailing

Hi - I am about to buy an i14T with the sail kit.

should i get the larger turbofins for BOTH the front and rear slots?
can i get the large turbofins for the rear, and the midsize ST for the front seat?
(my front paddler would prefer 'easier to pedal' fins, unless i must get the largest ones for sailing)

thanks, mark

The Turbo fins are nice for sailing since the sail moves the boat along well. Using standard fins is a bit like rolling downhill on a one speed bike and reaching max comfortable RPMs on the pedals. You can mix and match fins on the front and back drives to fit the needs of the pedaler. Turbos shift you into third gear! I think STs offer a very similar feel... but maybe second gear.

What I meant in my question was:
Do I need turbofins BOTH front and rear during sailing for their centerboard effect?
(ie my question wasn't about pedalling the drives while sailing, but about dual turbofin neccessity as passive larger centerboards)

..or can i get by with turbofin in the rear and regular in front

ps. I am planning to add the jib shown in viewtopic.php?f=32&t=12144

thanks, mark

You don't "need" Turbo fins for sailing, but I'm sure they do offer a little more "centerboard effect" if hanging straight down. Best centerboard effect is actually created by pedaling to keep the forward motion and hull tracking.

Hi Telesave

Just about to buy an i14T and plan to do a fair bit of sailing in it also. Think i will opt for the turbo fins for that extra centre board effect.

Was also wondering can you attach the sailing rudder to an inflatable?

Many thanks
