I wonder if the vertical height component of the Ama is different ( TI > AI ) and being on ground, that may be what caused the difficulty on closing the Aka's ?

Being on the ground had no affect on trying to fold the amas in. They were not touching the ground.

If you want a technical explanation read the previous posting from Matt.

Not quite plug and play and some riveting involved. :(

Thanks for the official word.

   Told ya there'd be some reactions to your pics, Nohuhu! :D

But seriously, despite the fact that the geometry of the akas won't allow the amas to fold in neatly, I'm looking forward to your assessment of how the TI amas work with the AI. With the extra buoyancy of those TI amas, together with those beaut seas you get there in Hawaii, I'd suspect that it would be a great combo!

So now, I'm respectably asking for some cool sailing pics, or better yet, a vid. 8)

Sorry Max,

You'll have to find someone else willing to try it.

I don't think they will help until the wind is strong enough to bury the AI ama. Then I think they'll help performance. The problem is that once the wind is that strong there will be stresses put on the akas that they weren't designed to handle.

I sure don't want to damage the wife's boat.

Thanks for the picts and comments, Jerry.

If someone could post comparison shots of the endcaps and collars this would help the conversation. This is really where the rubber meets the road.

We're not overly concerned about stress failures other than the shear pin. And this particular setup is reinforced by the outboard seating. But if it's gonna break, it'll happen here.

I might add that the TI Amas withstand burying very well. Just watch Mitch sailing.

This grafting experiment and sail took place with borrowed Amas (in case you thought Batman is colorblind) and these are not on the boat now. When a set of yella TI Amas hits the islands, they will be installed and finetuned. Extending the endcaps and replacing the collars are being considered to optimize the fit. Possibly ditching the bungee system altogether.

FYI, Hawaiian upgrades to the stock TI are currently underway. That should be a hoot.

Stay tuned. Same Bat Time. Same Bat Channel.

nohuhu,

I've buried my TI amas also but it probably takes at least twice the force to bury them. That's a lot of extra strain an the AI akas.

Matt, what do you think?

Is that going to be a true Hawaiian upgrade of tying the Aka and Ama with rope?

Honestly, why not? It worked great for the last thousand years.

I'll take lashing over bungy any day.

'Cept maybe when Kiwi Adventure jumping.

ATTENTION BATFANS!

The TI Amas (yellow) have finally arrived and the AI refitting is almost complete. It's a clean, custom fit that anyone should be able to follow.

A V2 Batwing is also being shaped for proper sailing in the upright position, along with other nifty tweaks.

We are getting some shop photos together and will maybe document the maiden voyage for you. New years day is the possible launch.

Till then,..Dont touch that dial!!

It really will be a Happy New Year.

When summer comes want to try the Bat boat mods with the penthouse tent. If can catch enough fish only need to find a way to get fresh water and then never need to touch land. That will be true Waterworld style.
