Post subject:  New Nylon Anchor
Just saw this nylon anchor reviewed on TV (The New Inventors-ABC TV Australia) tonight and think it will be perfect for use on the AI.

I don't want to carry a monster anchor and the folding one I've got gave me some grief over Christmas when I was away.

They say adding chain is optional but if you choose not to extra rope should be paid out to compensate. Also has provision to mount the shackle down further and using a cable tie as a weak link to allow it to be pull out backwards if it snags on rocks, reef etc.

Did you order the 2.3kg model?

Ahhh, just watched the show on iview. Obviously the 1kg nylon one is the way to go. Looks great!!

I saw the show and thought the same. I will order the 1kg model.
PS-Just got back from South Australia. Had no internet access so have some catching up to do.
Did you end up making contact with those two Americans I just read about who were looking for AI's?

Unfortunately didn't get a chance to catch up. Been very busy the last few weeks. Was bad timing. Not long before the only sunlight I see will be on weekends :cry:

On a lighter note my new anchor turned up today. Looks pretty good. Might get a small length of chain to go with it. Seems you can have any colour you want so long as it's pink....
I'll give it a run over Easter if I can get out. Pretty cool how it rolls over if you put it on it's back or side. Bit like a cat - always lands on it feet. Well right side up anyway.

I watched the prog & thought it was a great invention. I then thought about getting one to use with the AI but I'm not convinced I have any real need for one :roll: Have I missed something :roll:

I don't always carry one but I've found it to be handy for-

*Fishing
*Having lunch where there's no beach and you want to stay in one place (can raft up so not everyone needs one)
*Stopping your AI from getting swept off the beach if a large swell rolls in.
*And might be handy for those with Hammocks fitted.
*makes good yak bling 8)

Mickey, it is a godsend anytime you need your hands (or feet) free from controlling the boat in substantial wind or current. I recall once trying to take the mast down to pass under the bridge into Woy Woy Bay. The wind was blowing 15 - 20 knots and the boat kept getting blown downwind, toward the rocky shore, every time I stopped pedalling. I ended up having to get sufficiently upwind of the bridge to give me time to get the mast down.
PS I just received mine and it fits easily through the twist and seal hatch for storage. I think I will attach a snap fitting, so I can attach it quickly to my bow-line when required.

Dave, I've already got a bowline set up on my boat: viewtopic.php?f=71&t=11759&p=64555&hilit=bowline#p64555
I will probably keep the current arrangement, but replace it with a longer line. I will probably put a couple of metres of chain on the anchor too. Haven't tried it out on the water yet.
If you really want control over the anchor, for fishing etc, I believe the trick is to install an anchor trolley system:

yeh i saw that vid a while back seems like overkill to me! All i would want is to be able to deploy a bow anchor from my seat. If the anchor has to stay on the bow when your sailing you would want a really light set up considering how much the AI wants to nose dive already.

Well the anchor in question only weighs 1kg (plus the weight of any attached chain). I'm planning on keeping mine stored in the hull. The way my bowline is set up, I can easily tie it to the anchor from the seat, but it will deploy from the bow.

I use an anchor trolley system. I carry my anchor in the rear and run the line forward around the front Aka and then attach it to the trolley. This way I can simply lob the anchor out ahead of the AI without it getting tangled up with the AKA etc and once it is planted, adjust the trolley to a suitable position to get the AI where I want it.
Because of the strong tides here in Chichester harbour, there are occassions where the tidal flow will beat the wind direction and being able to adjust where the anchor attaches to the hull helps with trimming.
I have contacted them to see about buying a nylon one, but have not yet had a response.

I've got the Hobie anchor trolley. Makes positioning the anchor point very easy. Very handy when fishing when you might want the wind from your back or side.
During my reading before purchase I found it recommended to have some sort of bungee to absorb wave related shocks. This is included with Hobie anchor trolley. Check out the kayak fishing forums for more info.
