Looks like some images here are 800 which seems to work fine. I wouldn't get much wider for best page viewing.

Looks like moving the weight back has a noticeable effect on raising and lightening the bow.

Thanks for that David. From the clip, the bow seems to be lifting well, even with my weight not right back. As I recall, we were sailing on a close reach when you took that clip.

Poetry in motion. In looking at the clip, this may be a good seating position running down wind when the AI is loaded, to help overcome any possible submarining. Mine you the negative would be that the center of gravity would be higher. If it did still submarine, how stable do you think the seating position would be Chris ?

Well, later on the water got choppier and I was on a beam reach and thinking I could definitely fall off if I wasn't careful. It added to the thrill a bit. I haven't had a chance to try it in submarining type conditions yet but I imagine it would feel more stable because it wouldn't be pitching sideways. I don't think I'd be using it outside the heads at Port Stephens.

Nice thread! I also like to sit on alternative seating positions. I often sit just in front of the rear crossbar at the windward side of the hull. So when sailing over starboard, I sit at the place of the rear (left) cup holder. This is a great place to be! In the proper wind, the boat is better balanced (both ways) and you sit more like in a conventional sailboat. A bit higher and dryer as well, and sitting a bit backward should also reduce weather helm a little.

I found that sitting on the rear crossbar should be even better. There you can sit in the proper sailing position (with one foot at the inner edge of the seat well, the other like that in the cargo well), thus being able to keep the AI straight up at moderate winds. But, obviously, you get a soar but quickly sitting on the aka just like that! I am still experimenting to try to make that work.

Obviously, a tiller extension is needed for all this, so I made one (thanks Chris, for your inspiring example!). I can really recommend making one. It really adds to this boats (already impressive) possibilities and it gives an even bigger sense of fun and freedom sailing the AI!

We have a really innovative guy in our sail club here on Oahu but he doesn't use the internet much. He uses email, so if someone wants details, send me a message and I can hook you up with him.

Anyway, he came up with this bench seat that really lets you move your weight around to get better performance. Check this out.

Again, this is Tom's idea, let me know if you want me to get you in contact with him. He also made that tiller extension so he can steer the rudder from any position.

Tom's a genius. Well - a mad scientist anyway :wink:

Check out his chromed West Marine Aka-mounted rod holders.

This weekend he grafted red TI Amas on his yellow AI for a test run. He liked it. Stay tuned...

We have a couple Hawaiian AI's with cool stern deck mods like this, and I think mine is next!

Right now I jump from the tramps to my ditch bag and back to keep the weight back, and I am convinced this rear quarter deck is a good idea. Surprised Hobie has not monetized it yet.

Now, who's gonna do the Kevin Costner swinging seat/grinder/steering station like on that trimaran in Water World?
