There's a new option for a wind indicator on the TI - the standard mainsail has a webbing loop at the top of the mast that is perfect to install a standard Spar-Fly wind finder from Davis Instruments. The unit's quick-release mount can be bent to slip through the sail's webbing loop, so there's no modification to the boat - just slip on and install the finder at the masthead. We tried it out today and it worked perfectly (after balancing per instructions on the box). A few pics:

hi dmfick. thanks for your post, its very interesting as ive only been out 6 times, and have found the need to know exactly where the wind is coming from, so i know when im looking good, and when not, regards my sail.

would this work perfectly on the ai single, as i would imagine the sails webbing loop at the top is very similar? how exactly do you attach it, and is it easily removeable or better kept attached?
yesterday i hit my top speed of 11mph, and on checking the wind history, would have been dealing with winds around 25mph, at its peak.

as i havent said it before, what an unreal peice of kit, or toy.

viva hobie..

The regular AI does not have the webbing loop at the top of the sail - if you search elsewhere there's lots of debate on the topic of how to add a wind indicator to the AI. I think the new loop on the TI is there for the planned, but now questionable jib kit that Hobie is hoping to release. In any case, it is serediptous - almost like it was designed to accomodate the Davis Instriments Spar Fly.

Hi Dave.

Great idea. Placing my order today for a new Spar - Fly Windex for my new TI. Thanx for sharing your experience. Please let us know if you have any additional installation tips.

I can't figure how to post pictures, but I have same set-up on my AI. I used a small loop of line around the mast web and have a small loop of line on my flyspar and biner them together for safety. I used some rubber tubing on the steel shaft to make alittle bigger and give it grip and wire tied it to a larger diameter and longer length of aluminum tube. It slips down the front sail pocket and the biner locks it in. Fits real snug and works great. Can send pics if like or tell me how to get them posted. don't see anyway to do it from my end.

I'm interested in seeing that Steven57,

To post pictures, post the picture somewhere online, then click the button in the posting window called "Img" some code will appear, just put the link to the picture between the square brackets img] (LINK) [img/

You'll figure it out... if not, post it online, and post the link we'll get it up for you. If that doesn't make sense, search for posts on how to post pictures, and there is probably a more detailed set of instructions.

'Just slide the shaft of the tell-tale down between the mast and the sail sleeve [on the side that snugs up when the sail is under load]...
I've been doing this going on 3 years without any problems...

I've just been using 3' or so of 1 1/2" wide ribbon. Also it ID's which boat from a distance (different color ribbons).
