Just another one is provided by Westmarine. More focused upon big boat technique

Not sure which one it is, but I have seen one for double braided rope, on their youtube channel.

Both probably a bit more complex for what the Hobie needs are.

Many thanks folks. I've mastered the splice technique and made up a couple (including the brass clip).

Collect my AI tomorrow!!!!

I just bought the stuff to make tethers for my Mirage Drives. I am picking up my boat the day after tomorrow, so nothing to measure against...

How long should these tethers be?

Thanks - Herb

Hi Herb. I measured lengths based on where is the item positioned when in use, and where the tether needs to stretch to, to reach its stored position when not in use. Therefore, my tethers are different lengths.

I have made 6 in all. 2 are at 1.5m, 2 are at 1m and 2 are at 500mm.

Hope this helps mate. All the best with your new toy !

Hi
Just wanted to share a friendly word to the wise about polypropylene rope. Polypropylene is very rapidly degraded by sunlight and will fail without warning. Store it away from light and retire it as soon as soon as see broken fibers. The rope will no longer feel smooth, it will feel scratchy.

I've seen this stuff fail under virtually no load.

Looks really nice, putting a coil in line is a really good idea. I've been using 2mm braided line, one on each expensive item and one line running fore to aft in each cockpit with clips hanging from it for water bottles and what not.

Cheers,

J

Good tip. Especially in areas with high sun exposure, year round.

Slaughter, how are those coils holding up on your whipper-snapper leashes?

Pretty good NOHUHU. Ergonomically they seem to work well and the coils are staying in place although I must admit that I don't know about it's UV stability kayakman 7. Good point which I never really considered but will certainly keep and eye on it. Thanks for the pointer. Also I have never really tested them under load. I should jump out one day and grab hold of a loop to see how it performs.

Kayakman7,

Good point there. The red poly rope I have pictured was purchased from Ace hardware. Cheap stuff and it coils nicely but you get what you paid for in regards to strength and longevity. Stopped using it after it started coiling up into each other and causing some weird tangles.

I've been using 3 or 8 strand poly rope for netting and tethering our heavy shorecasting equipment and they've been lasting over ten years now. They're the same poly rope used by commercial long liners and sold locally here in Hawaii (POP and Hanapaa). Not a rope expert but there seems to be different grades/composition of the stuff. Short non-coiled 2 - 2.5' sections of this stuff been working for me as tethers.

We also used heavy monofiliment leaders and they seem to be affected by sun also. Especially when nicked and worn near the terminal ends. Eventually learned to recrimp or change them out often. Not sure if the "whipper-snapper" line is made from the same stuff. But monofilament seems to be working as coiled tethers for a few kayak fishermen I know. Haven't heard of any breakage.

cheers!

I've used my weed whacker/whipper snapper leashes for about a year or so...not coiled, brass swages and they are still holding up fine. I'm in NorCal, so we don't have intense sunlight like some places. I'm on the salt about 1x week all year
