Post subject:  Sail ropes annoying at the back
Aloha Hobie community

Well my wife is tired of getting the sail ropes in her face when we go sailing. (one pair of earing as casualty)
Is there any trick to avoid those ropes in her face?

I was thinking of adding a U shape (or round) at the back behind her seats (where fishing poles holes are) to help the ropes rotating around her head.

Anything similar done?

Check out HALIBU77 you tube channel. His video "Kayak Camera Mount" @ about 51 seconds gives some details. I seem to remember he provided some more information in one of his videos, but I can't remember where/when.

I am not certain how much higher this solution will provide for ear ring snatching purposes, considering the sail angle. Perhaps a helmet? Just kidding.

Aloha No EZ,

Being over 6', I experience this often and just thank god there is no Hobie boom. :lol:

Have you tried reefing the sail (even temporarily, prior to tacking)? This will provide you both more headroom, since this raises the sheet.

She may enjoy herself more out on the tramps. You can't get further away from the sheetline than that!

The real trick seems to be with running downwind, where the sail tends to flop back and forth a lot. I guess the best you can do there is to pick a strong broad reach and giver her LOTS of warning when you plan to jibe.

Thanks guys

It was downwind and now basically we have worked on our communication skills to synchronize

She did laugh at the helmet suggestion but prefers getting new earings

I am 6'3 and I cant sit at the back. Not sure why no one has come with a reverse U guiding the ropes nicely. Will do that at home

I used to experience the same problem when sailing with a reefed sail. The simple cure was to sheet in tight as I turned into wind and then ease out as I bore away on the new tack. No flapping sail, no flailing sheets, just a safe & controlled tack! This works equally as well when gybing downwind.

I have the same problem with our TI and the back seat. I built a simple PVC thing that fits into the rod holders and raises the sail control line enough to help some.
I outlined how to built it in the forum post The ultimate Tandem Island (hydrofoils,spinnaker,jib,etc) viewtopic.php?f=69&t=33720

I vaguely remember a discussion on the use of a traveler whose block ran along some sort of hoop (plastic). It might help prevent earing theft and face slap depending on the new angle of the main sheet to the traveler rod.

Never got into it due to potential of more lines snagging fishing gear.

I don't know how I missed your PVC rod holder bar before but thanks for posting the details again. 8)
This would be perfect to prevent the sheet from snagging on the cooler. I've added it to my list of projects! :)
