One way to get hiking further back is to cantelever the hakas.
Mine go 15" back from the rear bar and are easy enough to get out on from the rear seat.
When i sail solo i regularly swap seats and sit out on the hakas, getting back in the seat to pedal round in a tack.

Forgive me if this has already been answered. I tried searching this incredibly massive forum. I'm a new TI owner as of 4 days ago. I was looking into the HAKA as the tramps won't support my weight. Does anyone know how much weight the AKAs will support when on the water. I'm looking for a means to support my 6'5" 300 lb frame. If I can't hike out then I can't hike out. I was just hoping for a possibility. Thank you.

Well your weight is spread across two akas. You would tend to sit toward the rear of the haka, so maybe about 170# on the rear aka and 130# on the front. I'm about 170# and when I hike out on my wing, all my weight is borne by the rear aka and crossbrace, with no apparent problem. I think you'll be fine.

Thanks Chrisj and Chocat - good thoughts for me to consider - one thing I want to make sure of is that its modular and easy to assemble/disassemble and transport.

schweppe--I have built 2 sets of hakas. The first is a very strong set. Used as a true bench, it supported 425# (2 people setting side by side in the middle). The link is http://www.hobiecat.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=69&t=37645&p=200342#p200342

Thank you both for the quick response. I'm taking her out tomorrow on her maiden voyage. A week or two late, but its the first time we've ever had monsoons in Alabama. I'm not complaining, it's also the first time in almost 10 years that we aren't in a state of drought. Winds are forecast for 6-10mph. It should be fun!

Has any one adapted surfboards as hakas? I have a couple of 6'5" foam core boards (that have not been used in a long time). As long as I kept my weight relatively close to the aka brace seems like it would work? Thoughts please

Surfboards have been used by a number of people. The only ones I have personally seen were on a TI and weighed about 46 pounds each--that is much too much weight for me. I like to camp. Has anyone tried a car box as a bench seat? Is the roof of the box usually too weak to sit on? Is the roof usually so rounded that you will not sit easily on it? Will salt water kill the lock and the hinges?

Who is that dark blue thing behind you wearing your life vest? Looks like, whoever he is, he will be very safe in the event of accident. He's already on (and probably attached to) the life raft, and he has the life vest. But what about you?

Beebrain; Tonystott has it right that's billy backrest. Those are seats from West Marine. They work well for ball games and such. Most of the time in Tampa Bay you could walk home if you went in so in the thin water we don't ware them. If we go off shore we put them on.
