Has anyone just used an 8 foot 1" x 8" cedar plank? I am thinking about coating it in either a water seal or maybe a West System G/Flex, or putting a furring strip on the bottom to support it. I just want it a crew to hike out without dragging their butt in the water, for a barber haul rig, and maybe for lashing down camping gear.

Thoughts?

Thats too narrow for my butt. Using two boards would make a safer platform.

Have seen folks use mini Hakas in combination with tramps though.

Waterseal will hold up, for a while. Varnish or a stain is better. Urethane has not held up very well at all, out here where there's high UV index.

Here's a picture of my spine-board hakas.

They weight around 15 lb, are bright yellow plastic, and are claimed to float. I secured them with webbing straps. They support my 220 lb self pretty well, although there is some flexing. They were meant to carry a person laying down, after all.

I've taken them out empty for hiking out, and also loaded with one kid on each side for balance.

My plan this weekend is to store my fish bag and other gear on the starboard aka and hike out on the port side. On the opposite tack, I'll sit in the main seat and let the gear help flatten the boat out a little.

I got them for around $80 each from a lifeguard store online.

Luxury. The Rolls Royce of Hakas. Just thinking Chris, if they do flex too much you could simply bolt a small sectioned channel or angle to the underside. Even if it fitted inside the Akas, as long as it stiffened the centre section. Or then again, the flex may not be a bad thing as long as it's not uncomfortable.

Those look great Chris. I'll be in Corpus this weekend too and hope to get a chance to check them out.

About as light weight a solution as you can get.

Not so fast ppicker. I’m only claiming the World Record for lightest and cheapest though. $49 @ 4.1kgs. Chris can claim it for the yellowist.

In fact I’m quite surprised how well mine has stood up to the elements. It is washed down after every outing but being galvanised mild steel, I would have thought that there would be signs of corrosion by now. But none.

I like the simplicity of those spinal boards. Problem is I can't seem to find one for any less than a couple of hundred dollars down here in Oz.

I also prefer ally, rather than wood and have been hunting around for 'builder's planks'. Something like this seems good:

... although 4.0m is a bit much a custom-cut length to suit an A.I. shouldn't cost more than 80 bucks...

Cheers,

Mike.

4.1 Kegs is like 100 freekin gallons of beer. Sorry, American joke.

Some great ideas so far but just wondering if Hobie is developing their own Haka benches by any chance? There seems to be enough interest in them.

I agree. I'd expect Hobie to be doing this. In the meantime, I'm going to make my own.

I notice that Repco is selling 1.8 metre aluminium ATV ramps for $218 a pair. These are ladder style, about 30cms wide with a load capacity of 300kgs each.

Spine Boards for Haka's. Thanks to all here for the idea.

I traded in my paddle boards for a set of spine boards. The paddle boards weighed 48 lbs each and the spine boards weigh 12 lbs. Ordered from Med Tech.

It cuts down my set up time by half and works the same. I leave the seats and pads attached to the boards and just strap them with the hull to the trailer. Work very well even with two people on one no flex, and the hand holds give lots of places to tie down any thing. I am very pleased with them.

Guess what my grand daughter is getting for her birthday? That's right Paddle Boards, Hope her Dad's balance is good!

Larry,
Which ones did you get from them? A link would be great if you have one. I've looked at several but unsure which to get.
Thanks,
Randy
