However, to me, it looks more like a bat cape then a bat wing.

NOHUHU: Looking at the pics, I'm guessing if a user wanted to he could reverse the rear tramps and add another set of tramps on the front also. This would turn the TI3 into a deck boat, you could easily get 6 to 8 kids on the boat (not exceeding the 600lbs weight limit, and everyone with a PFD of course). I have 6 kids (yea just like the Brady bunch) boy if I had something like this 25 yrs ago we would have used the heck out of it out on Devils lake in Wisconsin. Now all my kids are grown up and tower over me, but hey all the grand kids will have some fun on a hot summer day. Now you have me thinking, I wonder what a set of heavy duty kayak Bob like spray skirts mounted back there (made from tramp material) would look like. It would save the cost of the rear AKA's and AKA cross bar. Would be a pretty slick looking boat with those on both the front and back of the existing tramps. Boy you could store a huge amount of gear. I'm hoping Kayak Bob sees this and adds a new item to his growing list of offerings (wider spray skirts made from tramp material that mount on either front or back of the boat). My current set of spray skirts (not made from tramp material) I have mounted on the back of my boat so my wife doesn't get splashed too much. Bob |

Bob - you are right. Dual tramps are on the drawing board. Looks like we will sew a custom set for the back. Meanwhile, we'll test her very soon with a combination of tramps and newly refined Hakas. First test will sailing 2 up with tramps on the front and Haka on the rear. Will be trolling for supermodels, so we can how she handles with more warm bodies on board. |

Noted. Here's an updated shot including the new turnbuckles, which tie in the rear Akas (#3) to the aft of the pontoon. Very stable. We can dial in the exact lift we need for the rear passenger (or to raise of the bow, for trim).  Wait till you see it all in action. |

Teaser could easilybe a shot using small Hobie inflatable ama aft. Always have meant to try this, be easier to rig, maybe OK in lighter winds. Unless, UNLESS, UNLESS  Got the regular ama mounted way aft with a crosspiece just aft of the rear hatch. That solves the sagging seat problem. |

Dan has it! Since we know the TI has been modified with a cross bar behind the rear cockpit, the ama's and aka's are mounted as aft as possible allowing the picture of the front cockpit with no bar visible. |

PHASE II In phase I of our tests, we added a new Aka crosstube behind the rear seat and built out a rear tramp section, while keeping the original Akas in front. A total of 3 Aka sets (TI3)  In phase II of the tests, someone had the crazy idea: "What would happen if you transpose the whole stock Aka/Ama arrangement back to the rear cockpit? Would it work? Would it float right? Would the nose dive? Yes, yes and no.  The result is a very sleek and well balanced craft that steers cleanly and actually lifts the bow on most points of sail. Floatation and weight is shifted aft, yielding a drier ride with a smooth bow wake and less resistance. A little more of a feeling of being "on plane" without a loss of steering control.  The pilot in the rear seat now takes advantage of fully supported tramps. I suspect this will be great for solo sailing. But it's great for riding 2-up as well.   The passenger now enjoys extremely easy access to the front seat, clear views of the water and a great "open" fish fighting position.  The passenger can always hop on the rear tramp to socialize or provide ballast in high winds. The boat responded well to this weight distribution.  Our pilot reported this new configuration was his favorite and he preferred the balance of the boat in this "phase II" position, calling the sailing "effortless".  At 7-8 knots, the boat barely sunk the Amas and maintained fine trim and maneuverability. Sailing was smooth and predictable, tacks were easy and in general, you did not sense any "extra" speed, but the GPS did. We were quite pleased with this test mode but still need to run the TI3 solo (and downwind in open swells) to know if the experiment is a complete success. We welcome your comments or questions.

Wow NOHUHU, what a great idea! I'm so excited about this modification. I'm picking up a TI this month; the modification/developments shown are a great guide. One question... could you post an updated parts list & modification tips for 'phase 3' please? Great job, and thanks for sharing! Steve |

D'OH!  Here I am thinking you've managed to sail the TI minus aka/ama (thanks to the teaser pic) when all you've done is move everything aft. All sorts of possible mods came to mind - foils, cantilevered tramps, even a weighted keel (like Bob's). I'm not disappointed though. That's one of the most innovative mods seen on these forums. I can see how this would really improve solo TI sailing. Great work! |
