Solar-E

If I understand the photo, it looks like if you lose tension on one of the loops, you lose both. Is that correct?

If so, that would make it strong, but not redundant?

NOHUHU,

I'm not quite sure what you're asking? but let me try answering this way.

Starting out with a 5/16th's shock cord measuring exactly 24 1/2" long and knotted at both ends, once both loops are pulled up and over the Eyelet Posts, the shock cord loops are tight and the Ama is snug up against the base of the Aka. At this point there is no play because the Rope Stop is tight up against the Eye preventing any further slack.

When I want to remove it, I simply pull the upper loop up and over the upper Eyelet post and yes, at this point both loops becomes lose so I can relax the shock cords, however I leave everything in place when I'm not actually using it. Basically it's quite similar to the original single loop system except now it's a double loop. It dosen't take but a few seconds to set it up, or take it off.

If this doesn't answer your question let me know, I'll make a video.

I can see NOHUHU's point. If the top loop comes off, there will now no longer be any tension in the lower loop, so there isn't the redundancy available when there are two independent loops. Confirmation of this would come from the ease with which the first loop could be attached...

tonystott,

I guess anything is possible, meaning that "if" the top loop ever came off then you're correct, there would no longer be any tension in the lower loop. That would be true for the original single loop system as well. I suppose the shock cord could actually break... (so far no one has ever written about that actually happening) but there's no way my shock cord is going to just slip off the Eyelet Post by itself with the tension that's on it now.

To be safe I carry a spare set in my tool bag along with a few other important parts I feel I need to have "just in case". However since I installed this system I've never experienced the shock cords coming off; in fact... just the opposite

The most extreme condition so far was sailing in 3'-4' seas with a head wind of 20-30 knots; and they never budged! In this situation, my old single loop system would have allowed my Amas to bang up and down on the Akas to the tune of Giuseppe Verdi's "Anvil Chorus".

There's probably several different ways to improve on this system, each with it's own set of variables and limitations. I think for the time being I'll stick with what I've come up with.

SeS,

The double bungee system you installed on my boat seems to be holding up very well. Below is a photo of my 2 yr old daughter zealously testing the strength of the double bungee system. Thanks, Ezra.
