Really like the Twist-n-Stow rudder on my 09 AI (storage/kayaking/light sailing), but also wanted better/more reliable steering while sailing in stronger winds and currents. So, how does one get the best of both worlds? This is what I came up with.

All aluminum square tubing modular construction. Riveted together. Using two Dotan Optimist14 kick-up rudders.

Just put it through a week of testing in Cedar Key, FL. Worked really well.

Now that's thinking outside the box.

Floats like a butterfly,.. stings like a bee!

Roman, I would pay to see Hakas and a Jib on that.

Seems like a lot of hardware but if it does what you want it to do, bravo.

Nice design and installation for sure.

Does it negate the need for the center daggerboard?

By the way, the kayak supports are equally novel. You might want to notify the maker that they have a product that can be marketed and sold to practitioners of two completely different endeavors.

:D Definitely hakas in the near future, as now I can steer effectively and effortlessly from anywhere on the boat. The tiller handle extends to 50+ inches.

 Lots of harware, you're right. As it started shaping up, I could hardly believe it myself. Especially the number of rivets, that went into it. But this is a prototype. I will have the one I am building for my wife welded - it'll be significantly lighter and less massive looking. Doesn't really replace the dagger but works rather well with it. I also noticed it tracked a little better when beaching with daggerboard removed. At $20 a piece for folding tables, they do make for nice and inexpensive kayak stands.

You are DEFINITELY going to like that!

Cool idea and very rugged looking. Appears your Ai was left unsupervised on the beach and a getaway mated with it.

Excellent idea Jax! Do you have a picture of the second one? Also how did you reinforce the hull?

Thank you,

Tom
