Unfortunately I posted a poor photo, but it's all I have at the moment. The TI is in dry storage until we can find a house in our new city.

The feather actually pivots on a thin meat skewer & the skewer is inserted into the webbing at the top of the sail. As the feather is naturally waterproof, water doesn't affect it. I have been using feathers for over 15 years of racing & I have found them to be the most reliable, even in sub-zero temps. (Yes when I was young & silly, I used to race dinghies in all weather conditions!) Now i'm too old & soft!

Always the pesimist arn't you Richard ! See I'm the optimist. I was thinking it would miss me and spear that 20kg jewfish that was swimming alongside.

In fact I have a confession. I only screwed in the fluro broadhead to see if I would get a reaction. Before I go sailing I plan to take it off altogether. It's good to know we all have each others backs.

After seeing nicnrobs's design for a wind indicator, I have been on the lookout for an eagle feather. Finished up that a mate came back from a shooting trip and while he was there, borrowed a handful from a dead carcass. I used the same hardware just simply removed the arrow and replaced it with this tail feather and glued it in. The brass hydraulic quick connect fittings work like your garden hose fittings, only smaller. I can simply unclip the indicator and replace it with a camera mount if needed. Something different. Can't wait to give it a go.

They are suppose to be protected Tony. He reckoned there were dead eagles with bullet holes everywhere. The farmers reckon they kill the lambs.

Nothing more dangerous than a narrow minded farmer with a gun in his hand hey !

These are not cheap but in this mode the can take a lot of abuse (stuck under dock) and keep working, once you tweak it back straight again.

I thought of that as well, but the wind strength and direction so close to the water is usually a lot different than up where the sail is.

The commercial sort made for sailing dinghies has virtually zero friction (they claim it is sensitive in winds as low as a single knot), and is simple to fit and remove. I had lost a couple until I drilled through the plastic fitting tube and inserted a straightened paper clip (it gets rusty after a while, but the replacement costs are attractive LOL). The white plastic is a PVC pipe joiner of appropriate diameter, held on with self-tappers.

I've found though that they can also be too sensitive, reading every slight wind, and boat, movement. I've put a nylock nut at the top that can adjust the amount of friction. Hopefully I will be able to adjust it to read anything greater than about 5 knots. Anything below that is usually an annoyance and the sail is furled and the drive is smok'n.

I would like to hook up a line from the top of the mass to the bow so I can hook up a flag to the line. maybe 4 feet up from the bow. The "wind indicator" would be easy to see without straining my neck and pretty accurate for the wind.

In the US it's a $25,000 dollar fine just to possess an eagle feather unless your native American (whats up with that???) according to here ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eagle_feather_law). Over here we would just use turkey feathers, nobody gives a crap about them (LOL)

I use some vhs video tape
Kost nothing ,no damage to the sails ,and move,s with the smallest breeze of wind

Johan, how would you fit that to an Island though? And how do you get video tape telltales to the masthead where the true wind is flowing?
