Had a mini brainwave, and undid one black bungee fitting on each side of the front hatch. Tied a new knot above the existing one, and then screwed the fittings back in. The bungees are now a fair bit tighter, but still (just) possible to re-attach and hold the hatch down firmly. Haven't tried it in rough water yet, but the theory sounds plausible.

I put an additional bilge pump under one of the front hatch bungee, haven't had a leak problem! Same idea but a different method….

I did the same thing with the ama bungees and it works great as well. Nice and tight. Much easier than some of the other solutions I have seen for the hatch seal as well. |

Ok .. I was saving my SuperSimpleSolution for an after-trial review but I guess I'll let my hair down early and reveal it now ..

Actually, that is just what I will also do with my bilge pump! I already have fitted a screw-in cap in one of my drink bottle holers, so not having to open a hatch to retrieve the pump is a real bonus. Thanks!

I've never really had an issue with excess water entering the hull. Perhaps it's just the luck of the draw with the initial AI assembly……..dunno. But installing the 'Splitter' has a 2 fold benefit in that some water is deflected away from the hatch, and also that the bungies require more tension to hold it on.  P.S. Nice cap Alan. A photo of you skippering the Island whilst wearing the shower cap isn't necessary, honest.

@ Tony: if works, go for it. People have to be careful about tightening down on the lid too much, or putting stuff under the bungees, because it is easy to distort (bend) the lid--then you really have a leak problem. Sounds like you did it just fine. When camping, you have to be careful not to put too much gear in the front hatch so that you have upward pressure on the lid. If you do, then the bungees don't pull it down tight enough and you can have major leakage. Since I now put a lot of camping gear on the hakas or in the rear top storage, I don't have that problem with the front hatch. Keith |

Well I had serious problems with a leaking front hatch and there was no quick & simple solution.  If the hatch and the hull have a real mismatch you have to do more.  Still get some water in the hull but very small amounts and absolutely not one single drop is passing the front hatch. BR thomas |

I have a TI and I don't think I have much issue there. I get some in from all the control ports. On a good reach the side of the kayak is pretty much in the water and being splashed continually... I just keep my stuff below in dry bags if it can't get wet...

One important factor I found is to "Burp" the lid. Give it a good push down. Sorta seats it. Night and day once I figured it out. |

On second thoughts, I WON'T be using my nilge pump to tension the front hatch bungees, because if the fitting securing the bungee (or the bungee itself) fails, I could then not only lose the front hatch, but any means of getting water out of the hull! Too risky IMO. My pump lives under my seat hatch, tethered to the openng so it can't get lost inside the hull. |
