Another good trip report Det. Sure you're not sponsered by Tourism NSW?

Interesting to see the new lights in action. Do they more about as the AI pitches and rolls?

The stern light is firm - on a relatively flat surface. The bow light (port-starboard light) base is on the ridge and needs packing to stop it from flopping left and right as the AI gets knocked about.

Twilight Sail/Peddle 3 March

Well it's Wednesday again - must be time for another twilight sail.

Unfortunately I could not get away from work before 17:30 so I wasn't on the ramp at the WSC until 18:45. Tonight I had my refurbished Mirage drive to test, plus my Yaesu FT60 programmed for the marine VHF channels. As I crossed the Harbour Bridge it was a little dissapointing to see all the flags as limp as, so I set off with an expectation of peddling much more than sailing.

I launched from the ramp with a 5 kt ESE breeze and slowly sailed out to meet the tail end of the twilight racing fleet.

Overall a very relaxing and calming evening on Sydney Harbour, with weather and port condition braodcasts and radio chatter over Marine VHF and a well performing Mirage drive.

Trip Log:
Tactical Distance: 5.17 NM
Max Speed: 5.5 kts
Moving Average: 2.9 kts
Time Moving: 1 hr 45 min

All great stuff, please keep it coming!

Was the wetsuit you wore a good choice of night sailing wear?

I find wetsuits too hot on the North Coast in daytime, (so I wear a breathing Goretex paddle suit for long trips), but I guess at night it's different, was it warm enough, how cold/wet were the conditions?

Ta, Max.

I found wind chill still an issue with the full steamer wetsuit - I'm not bothering with it again above the waterline. On the last trip I tried a pair of 3mm wetsuit shorts over rash tights plus a spray jacket (similar to upper half of SkyMax's dry suit) - that worked well.

My trip of 3 March will be my last on Sydney Harbour for another 6 weeks (whilst I'm scurrying around Germany and Norway).

Last Wednesday I was excited to find two new red AIs on the racks near mine at WSC. Hopefully the owners of these will tell us about their adventures on Sydney Harbour over the next few weeks.

Interesting. The numbers are growing. Did you leave contact details on them?
I joined WSC the other day but I'm not storing my AI there. I hear they are doing an audit of the storage racks there.

Enjoy your trip away. Hopefully we can get some quality winter sailing in when you get back.

Here's a short video from the other weekend on Sydney Harbour-

Come on guys and gals. I'm hanging out for an AI trip on Sydney Harbour. A bit difficult to do it from EU myself so I'm relying on the team back home to help me out.

Tell me about it. I'm suffering from lack of sailing and reading everyone else having fun. I'm planning to go out this coming Saturday (27 March). Plus I'm missing those sausage rolls they do at WSC.

Just to make sure nobody had drained Sydney Harbour or moved WSC while Det is away I ventured out on Saturday (27 Mar 10). A mate of mine decided to hire a kayak from one of the places on Rose bay and come out too. Wasn't a very long trip as there was a bit of wind for the return trip and he had to paddle back into it.

Really made me glad I had the AI that's for sure. I decided to do the polite thing and pedal along with him rather than shoot off under sail. The mirage drive made things easy as I could sit back munching on snacks with my free hands. 8) Pretty cruel actually.

The mission was to check out the coffee situation at Chowder Bay which is almost directly across Sydney Harbour from Rose Bay. Traffic was pretty light so we made good time via Shark Island and found the cafe just off the beach. Mission accomplished.

How the other half do it....

I managed some solo sailing afterwards and went chasing the big boats off Clark Island.

I'm back in Sydney on 11Apr and don't start work until 15th. Anyone up for a Sydney Harbour sailing adventure between these dates?
