Thanks Det and Chris. Great day out even if I'm knackered!
34 km was the longest trip yet. Pics to follow when I'm in less pain :D
(yes, the wind died....)

Quick update with photos.

Det and I launched near Palm Beach, sailing past Barrenjoey Head and around Lion Island. Great swell off the ocean and plenty of fun to be had riding the waves in toward the Island. We then set off for Patonga but got a little worried ChrisJ wouldn't make the trip. However in the end he sailed out to meet us just off the beach and we continued on to Refuge Bay in much lighter winds.

Refuge bay was packed with boats being a long weekend here. Managed to squeeze the 3 AI's onto the beach, have some lunch and a hot coffee from the coffee boat doing the rounds in the bay.

After lunch and a chat with people on the beach about the AI's we headed off in still light breezes. We parted company with Chris as he headed back to patonga with Det and myself continuing around West Head back to Palm Beach and arriving just on nightfall.

Great photos Cows :) Looks like a beautiful day down there.
I wonder how much business the coffee boat does  I guess it's very seasonal and variable
It's certainly something that would be very welcome for those in Yaks/canoes etc

Refuge Bay with Dave & Chris

After swapping vehicles and loading the AI on the roof rack of the Subi the night before I managed to get an early night. Nevertheless I slept through my 6:15 alarm and found myself 30min behind schedule for my meeting with Dave at Palm Beach. With lunch prepared, snacks and drink packed and a change of clothes loaded I was off.

I managed to get to the meeting point only 10 minutes late and Dave had arrived just ahead of me. We were rigged and on the boat ramp by 9:30, and soon taking advantage of a 10-15 kt southerly on our way around Barrenjoey and on to the eastern side of Lion Island.
Image

The plan was to meet up with Chris near Lion Island at around 10:30, but when we got there, no sign of Chris neither visual nor on UHF CB. So Dave and I played in the 1.5m swell and SSE breeze, followed by a circumnavigation of Lion Island.

By 11:30 it was time to head for our targeted lunch spot at Refuge Bay. Now the wind had turned predominately WSW so we tacked westward towards Patonga where Chris would be launching. As we chatted on the radio, Chris' voice broke through and soon his sail was visible about 1 NM off Patonga Beach.

The winds were very variable, frequently dropping off to almost nothing, so our inboard motors were well exercised.

Traffic on Pittwater, Broken Bay and Brisbane Waters was greater than I has seen for a long time. The previous warm weather and forecast of a fine day appears to have brought everyone out on this fine Anzac Day holiday - all taking advantage of the last warm day of the season. The moorings in Refuge Bay and America Bay were chock-a-block with numerous boats rafted up and socialising. After a long sail and peddle, the smell of BBQs exacerbated the pangs of hunger, and after picking up a large cappucino from the coffee boat, we were soon beached near the waterfall and scoffing down our lunch (between exhaulting the virtues of our magnificant craft to all and sundry).
Image

The return trip started with a long peddle out of Refuge Bay. As we got out into the middle, a 10-15 kt breeze sprung up from the SSE and we were sailing again, Chris reaching on his way back to Patonga and Dave and I on a leisurely tack towards Barrenjoey. After a bit more of a play in the breeze between Lion Island and Barrenjoey the sun was getting very low on the horizon and we were threatened with shade on our way back down Pittwater. As we entered Pittwater the wind turned to a light SSWester. Dave chose to furl the sail and peddly along the Barrenjoey and Palm Beach shore back to the launch site, whilst I tried making as much of the wind as possible and tacked down the middle of Pittwater.

Det - great photos & trip report :D
I'm a bit suprised that the famous waterfall (at refuge bay) doesn't feature in any of the photos
Hope it hasn't dried up

Contrare! I have edited the post above to identify the waterfall trickling down the cliff. Click on the pic above for an enlargement - then exercise your imagination to see the trickle consequential to rain the day before.

I can't see it.
Here's what it looked like when we were there in March 2004 - more like the Norsca advert.

Mickey, the waterfall was running just fine.
David, I think you should enter that photo of Det off Lion Island in Slaughter's photo competition. It's a definite contender. 8)

Well, after 9 pages of talk, the pictures were worth it!

Bob, this thread is Det's ongoing blog and it's loaded with pictures. It's the East Coast Extravaganza thread that's all talk and no action (yet ).

Nice work fella's, another great AI trip! 8)
I was wishing I could make it but sadly I had to work. :(
It's a beautiful area. Pedalling back seems to be the norm for this trip!

Magic stuff fellas. I missed the post somehow and by the time I realized it was on, I had other plans. Would have loved to have joined you as the trip down that way that we did last year was one of my favorites. The coffee boat is a bonus.

Sorry Det missed the post again until too late. Would have been a bit of a squeeze for me anyway but hope you had a good day and got enough wind.
