For Fathers’ Day, we met up with our friends at Taree, who recently also bought a TI… “red, coz they’re faster”. We opted to head for the Manning River near it’s mouth, for a picnic lunch and of course some sailing.

Sailing together with our friends, a duel was inevitable – which was faster, the Red Rocket or the Yella Terra? Captain Stephan on the Red Rocket was variously loaded up with both adults and kids on the day, but the competitive spirit kicked in and we enjoyed a bit of ‘match racing’ – with pedal assist when it helped.

The day started with nice 10 knot winds which gradually increased to around 25 knots in the later afternoon, which produced some exciting sailing!

That looks like fun! Can't wait

Are you telling me I'm not the first person to think of calling a red TI 'The Red Rocket'? Just kidding, it would have to be the most unoriginal name for one but still the best

Now I have to start getting creative before I officially name mine

RW, the look on Kobi's face was priceless! I'd already reefed to the first batten, but we got hit with an extra strong gust, and it took me a second or two to ease the sheet. He enjoyed it though.

BR, Captain Stephan hasn't named his red TI... it just popped into my mind whilst making the vid - though now that I reflect, didn't you (or someone else?) refer to that name in a previous post? Oops.

I did the other day but since I don't have mine yet (hopefully 1 wk) I can't really claim it. It does roll off the tongue nicely

Maybe a new post should be started that claims names? Maybe a pic to go along?

I'm happy to come up with something else

Son looked a bit bored at the start with arms folded but towards the end the smile was priceless!!

Mine will be The Red Devil

The Red Devil vs the Yella Terra... I like it.

Given that you sound like you have your steering wheel on the right side of the car (pun intended), where in the world are ya?

Max

I am in Brisbane.

I will be putting my boat in mainly in Manly at RQYS

I like the name "Yella Fella"

Just had a look on Google maps... looks like you have great sailing options from Manly!

Hey Max

Apart from the various club facilities (about 5-6 clubs in the area) there are many public ramps with sheltered access, etc and islands galore meaning it is a great spot.

If you get up this way a sail across to Tangalooma and the wrecks with camping on the beach is a must (amongst other options)

From Manly you can also sail all the way safely to Gold Coast with hudreds of stops/camping areas on the way if you wish. Have never done it sailing but take my power boat the inland route at 16-18 knots and it takes 3.5 hours. Want to do it in the Hobie for sure!!!

I first saw the AI when a club member and his 2 kids took 3 AI's from Manly south like this. Thats when I thought...got to have one of those!!!

If you are up this way I am happy to do a trip with several Hobies down this route.

WOuld be a blast!

Mind if I invite myself along for that one? Sounds like you could drag that one nicely over a full weekend, it's now on my books

Awesome vid, Max - looks like you guys had a blast! Now, if we can only get you to move to the rear seat so your crew can hike out on the tramps - you'll be able to go even faster with all the sail out! :D

Yea Mitch, dead right, rear is the way to go! Kids are way more agile than me. And I don't have any super models available right at this moment. :D

I'm just waiting for a new cleat to mount on the rear aka xbar for the furling line - one thing I've learnt is that you need to use it, which is the only reason I'm still forward!

I used to sail 26 - 48 ft yachts, where you'd reef for average wind speeds and handle that, but these Islands aren't the same - more like flighty dinghys. Constantly adjusting furling etc, if you want to push to the max.

Gotta get me a GPS... bit pissed off that you can't get a decent Fish Finder & GPS combo, where you can upload your trip to mapping stuff like Google maps, and especially have a record of speed etc. Don't really want two bits mounted.

Anyways, glad you liked the vid... a bit long, and I thought not too many would like my choice of muzak for this one... but heck, Eddie has fast fingers! If you haven't seen him, watch the clip of him doing it at Eruption Guitar Solo--Eddie Van Halen. Mad!
