That is interesting, Paul. Sounds like very good advice for Hobie/Jim Czarnowski.

Already looking at that... Jim was there of course.

The Penguin Man; Jim Czarnowski has posted his videos of his Watertribe Everglades Challenge. This is the first one. Use the 52 video button to get through them all...

Nice shots of the jib sail and some of the weather conditions we encountered during the race.

Meanwhile, the Challenge goes on for the little red Scamp, which remains grounded on mud near Curlew Key as of last night, when one of the crew returned to retrieve her. He crawled half a mile through FL Bay muck to get aboard.

Are we having fun yet? What defective part of my brain actually wants to do this, and is there a cure?

The Scamp finally made it back to Flamingo yesterday evening. Now that's a long race! Or something.

Yes, great to see Scamp is back from the mud flats of Florida Bay.

Those videos, a series of short videos by PenquinMan/OceanDiva (aka Jim Czarnowski/Elena Barnett,) are interesting. Here is Dogslife link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-dkqICPZ2U&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL

One problem Jim & Elena were having was diving of the TI bow. At one point in the video, Jim is sitting in the back seat, and Elena is sitting in the stern storage area, all to keep the bow up.

Also, the first few videos show spray skirts--presumably NOT Kayaking Bob's (Reconlon's). Are these Hobie prototypes? Frankly, they don't look as good as KB's, but we will have to wait and see.

Talked to Paul Myers this weekend at our biannual sail and camp on Caya Costa. He entered the EC in his new AI. As can be seen in the above videos, it was rough going with lots of peddling. Paul made it half way, before pulling a little short of the second check point. His GPS quit, his vhf quit and his cell phone quit. He was navigating with compass and paper charts (the old fashion way). He was experiencing some nasty salt water rash were the sun don't shine and extreme fatigue. One report suggested that he had some rudder issues, but he indicated the boat held up fine.

It's easy to see why they call it a challenge.

Paul's "rudder issue" was when he caught his rudder on a crab trap line in the dark. Once he realized what the problem was, he untangled it and was on his way.

Interesting point. This is a problem for people on life rafts, and if you do the EC in and AI, you are pretty much signing up to be wet for days on end. It is asking for trouble. A drysuit presents a different set of problems, but would solve that one.

At least one person complained about his dry suit filling up with water--from perspiration!

Ray,

did you ever get your TI mast step bolt repaired??? That must have been disappointing to have to drop out when that broke.

I will see you on the starting line in two weeks at the NCC... http://www.watertribe.com
