Post subject:  South Africa. Do we have Island Sailors from there, here?

Hey all
I've become more and more interested in the Southern Coast of Africa due to exposure to some amazing vids from the Discovery Channel.
Are there any members on this Hobie Forum that hail from Durban or Cape Town?
If so please respond and let us know about the local Hobie or AI/TI scene there.
Thanks in advance
Fred

well i'm here, so i thought i would reply. born and bred in sunny, humid durban, i enjoyed all things african till i jumped ship in 2000 and am now living in safe, beautiful cornwall, where sailing my ai has fast become my favourite pastime.

whilst out of touch with current localised area issues in s.a, i do however know the coast between durbs and cape town pretty well. any spots in particular your keen on visiting? sea kayaking and ski fishing almost go hand in hand with the abundance of edible fish available, but regulations and licences are required. launching often entails driving through surf, so the ai/ti crew would certainly be limited to harbour launches or inland water sailing, due to an abundance of sea swell moving up from the south/southeast.
a safa friend recently mentioned that one doesnt see too many new hobiecats around as the prices were astronomical, (which i can believe) so mostly they're old and patched and well used..

good luck with your endeavour

Hi

I live in Johannesburg, but keep my AI in Mozambique.
Also have a Hobie 16 there. We sail in a large bay near Vilanculos ( in the Bazaruro National Park).
All though we would never venture to go out to sea, the local fisherman do go out through the surf.
I have attached a link to give you an idea of the place - it is very remote, and I have never seen another AI sailed anywhere in SA.
Water temperature in winter about 22C, summer about 30C.

Thanks Guys
It would seem that the Hobie Cats are better suited to punch through the surf there.
Considering the insane cost of transport or purchase there of an Island from the West Coast of North America (or Europe), renting a Hobie with crew/owner might seem to be the better solution.
Be well, and ty again for the info
Fred
