Chris - My setup still isn't ideal. Thats why I'm trying the FlexiBoom approach underneath. Also wondering if I velcro the pad to the sleeping bag ??? Dunno.

HonuSail / Mickey - You may be onto something with the Dreamwalker. Trouble is, us Adventure Sailors have a rough and tough image to uphold and that looks hard to do dressed up like a knob.

Stringy - And I'd be interested to know how a hammock could handle 2 people suspended over a TI. I found that being anchored North / South and the wind at 4knots from the East had me a little nervous. That hex fly is a pretty big sail and I thought I might wake up at Myuna Bay. Any stronger and I would have needed to untie from the tree and let the wind direct me East / West on the anchor.

Slaughter? "...dressed up like a knob" That is not in the glossary of Australian slang. What does it mean for those of us who don't speak Australian?

Chekika, one look at the guy standing up, or worse, the two guys(1) at the ski fields, will give you a perfect understanding of the meaning of calling someone a knob

I would rather freeze to death than be seen wearing one of these stupid abominations :)

(1) gender is not obvious in the video

Gee guys, they're not that bad - they've even got Woody Allen's personal endorsement.

Plus, you can frolic at the water's edge in them.

For Keith (although you've probably worked it out by now!) I think the reactions from the other skiers says it all. :)
"knob" (or nob) • a general insult for a disliked or stupid person; "dickhead".
He's such a knob.
You are a real knob.
Don't be a knob.

Slaughter,
Just as well you didn't get that jacket eh mate?

Touché Stringy

BTW, that reminds me: The wind came up pretty strong off the ocean that night and it didn't cause the hammock any problems.

This "to hammock or not to hammock" discussion seems as polarized as political parties here in the US.

One thing that has occurred to me, is there a correlation between height & acceptance of hammock use? I'm 6' 1", a side sleeper, and I've never enjoyed laying in a hammock for long.

Also, I've given some thought to sleeping on an AI, but, so far, for all the camping I do, there is usually a handy, legal beach or campsite within 10 mi or so. And, it is hard to ignor the incredible comfort of an Exped air mattress.

They are expensive, but I've used mine for about 30-40 times in the past year, and I'm planning many more nights. It figures out to be pretty cheap for a great night's sleep.

I reckon keep on do'n what your do'n Keith. I haven't seen or used those mattresses but they look quite impressive. A tent has another big advantages over a hammock that we haven't even spoken about......room ! You can't put anything at all next to you like your hat or phone or book or socks otherwise they try to burrow their way to your arse like an ant to a hibernating bears. There are overhead mesh pockets for gear but space generally is at a premium.
I'm the other way in that I've never been comfortable on an air mattress. Sleeping on sand is OK but when the ground is like concrete, I'd rather try and sleep sitting in a chair. I'm a 6' side sleeper and I've never slept as soundly whilst camping as I have in the hammock. Personally I don't think I'd sleep as good if my hammock wasn't the Asymmetrical lay flat type.

Keith, the world is certainly divided into those who find hammocks comfortable and those who don't, though I would recommend that anyone new to camping hammocks try two or three nights in one before making a decision. You kind of get the hang of them (excuse the pun). There doesn't seem to be a correlation between height and acceptance.
If you're doing your camping on beaches and they're legal, there's probably no compelling reason for you to get a hammock. Where they are great is in wooded or sloping areas, where it can be difficult to find a bit of clear, level ground for a campsite. Also, at least under Australian law, they afford an opportunity to sleep on the boat, in areas where camping is otherwise restricted.
Agree with Slaughter - the assymetrical ones are much more comfortable, 'cause you can stretch out on the diagonal.

PS Slaughter, my hammock has a plastic clip on the ridgeline, up near the end, on the inside of the hammock, where I hang a drawstring bag for my phone, laptop etc.

That's right Chris -I'd forgotten that. It blew my sun shelter over and collapsed it. It's good to know the hammocks can handle strong winds. If I just had my AI I'd end up with what you and Russ have done but most of our camping is with the TI and I can't see a double hammock being that practical.
PS- I'm still laughing over that 'frolic at the waters edge' pic!

I'm still laughing at the picture of Woody Allen in Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex But Were Afraid to Ask. What a great movie.
