About the only thing I don’t like on the AI compared to the TI is the drop in dagger board. I’ve love to have one you can just deploy or retract by sliding a lever as on the TI. It’s not a problem to drop the thing in or take it out, but once out the small cockpit of the AI doesn’t offer many, if any, areas to set the dagger board where it won’t be in the way of something. In fact, it’s about the only thing I fear eventually dropping overboard (hopefully it’ll only happen in shallow water, which is the only place I’ve had it out anyway).

Tomorrow I’m going to sail a bit and try out an idea I’ve been working on. I’ve built a swing arm contraption that allows me to mount the dagger board on the forward Ama. It can be swung down into the water, or flipped up horizontal, with a single, simple movement.

My only concern is that when the dagger board is to windward and the boat heels over a bit, the reduced area of dagger board in the water may (will) result in reduced effectiveness. I won’t know until tomorrow, but I already suspect I may need to mount two of these, one on each Ama, to keep enough surface in the water no matter how much or to which side the boat heels. I think there are at least a couple kayak sailing devices that are already built this way.

At any rate, if it works it’ll keep the dagger board out of the cockpit when it's not deployed in the water.

You could make my simple daggerboard holder...

Thanks, nice work. That's certainly one way to secure it.

But I'd rather not have to take something out and then insert it into something else. I'm moving towards something that can simply be flipped up, or down. It remains part of the boat at all times.

Then you really want a TI instead of an AI :)

Not sure I'll go that far just to get a up/down daggerboard (although I suppose it would be a nice excuse, wouldn't it).
