Left and Right Amas?

I think I already know the answer to this question, but is there a forward left and right Ama for the Tandem Island, or are they interchangeable.

My left Ama rides in a "nose down" attitude while the right one rides about level or slightly up in the front. I measured the height difference and the left Ama's nose is a full 5-1/2 inches lower than the right one. With the boat in a level attitude, the left front Ama plows the water, the right one is a couple or three inches above it.

Got out the measuring tape, although it became apparent to the naked eye once I got the boat and trailer on the level.

The left rear Aka is angled differently from all the rest. The bottom of the Aka (which fits inside the Ama) is a full 3.5 inches higher than the right side Ama which pulls the left Ama up in the rear and down in the front.

Not to mention, the front Aka crossbar is 1/2 inch higher on the right than on the left. The rear Aka crossbar is 1/2 inch higher on the left than on the right.

Sometimes all these little things can cancel each other out. Other times they conspire against you and result in adding themselves up in a single direction.

As far as i can tell there is no polarity to the amas....i am guessing you do indeed have something tweaked.

The Ama on the other side points up, not down like this one.

The garage is 8000 square feet. It is filled with boats. Some of them are actually mine. The rest are my buddies who have selflessly helped me fill the otherwise empty work space with their personal items.

I think I have identified the problem. Your getting boats made on Mondays, before the bulders at Hobie have had a chance to recover from the weekend.

I tracked the problem to a incorrectly cast/bored collar-hinge assembly. It caused the port rear Ama to leave the assembly at a too high angle, pointing the front of the port Ama down steeply.

While I intend to press the dealer/Hobie for a replacement port Ama, I spent the afternoon attempting to fix this issue in case the winds rise this weekend.

I filed the miscast bore towards the proper direction and then overbored it. Then with a stick of steel stock bored and reduced it to create a steel bushing to fit center in the bore, epoxied it in place, and reassembled.

Note the angle of the port Ama now, compared to the photo in my original post in this thread. The Ama no longer points downhill nor plows the water with the boat sitting level on calm water. It matches the opposite side now.

So you also have a full machine shop in the empty back corner of your garage. Now you are making us green.

None of these boats is going to have perfect geometry, but if yours is as out of whack as mine, you'd already know it. The nose of my port side Ama was almost underwater when the boat was sitting still on a calm surface.

Nice work Tom, not sure how Hobie will treat the request for a new ama though now that you have worked it. I hope they do the right thing and exchange it for you.

Just to clear up some terminology, we're actually replacing the left rear aka, not the ama. The amas are the floats and the akas are the bars.
