At first I thought it might be my forward Aka slipping, but that seemed impossible due to how it mounts. A rough water day with the sail furled exposed the problem.

I took a section of nylon tubing and bored the inside...

Turned the outside...

To the appropriate sizes. Then epoxied the extremely thin collar to the mast base and fine tuned the fit.

It's very clean now. Extremely little wobble. To be honest, it wasn't really hurting anything, but the "CLUNK" was a little disconcerting. Now it slips into place easily, but no more "clunk."

Well done Tom....nice to see a fellow rod builder on the board  ....i may do this with some guerilla tape, my AI mast has a bit of slop...wishing i had a metal lathe.....i could throw the mast on my spinner and do multiple coats of epoxy until its perfect, i do this with ferruls sometimes

I would think even just that little bit of slop puts more strain on things..

So what kind of buttwrap are you guna do on that thing?

If it wouldn't be covered up by the mast....

Tape would probably take up the slop as well, but being somewhat soft it may not provide a good surface for the roller bearing to work against.

Something I thought about - a wrap of D thread coated with maybe 5 applications of Permagloss would take up about 1mm and offer a rock hard surface for the bearings to roll on. That might be a simpler way to do this.

Yea definitly and the adhesion would be better with epoxy on epoxy.....having a constant supply of epoxy on hand is always helpful  .....i may try this need to check how much slop i have

PG is much, much harder than any epoxy. Thus the bearings should turn nicely on it.

Looks like good stuff, always had good luck with u-40 products.....probly stick with epoxy if i do it tho free is always better

BEST LINE EVER, " I don't like it, and I'm going to fix it.". Well done, sir.

Tom,
I'm interested in this "D thread". What is it exactly?
I'm looking for a better way to build up the TI's furling drum taper so that it fits the AI's mast tube.
Great workshop setup BTW! 8)

Nylon rod guide wrapping thread in size D. This allows you to keep the drum concentric without having to do any machine work. The coating is an ultra-hard aerospace moisture curing urethane developed by a former Boeing chemist, although there are likely others that would work equally well.
