Hmmmm, that is a different concept. Here in Australia Hobie has run Hobie Island Big Day Out events at multiple locations, with no charge. Entry included a commemorative T-shirt, and lunch on the second day provided by Hobie dealers.

It will be interesting to see if the UK alternative model works.

Brits love to enter paid "events" and festivals. The mountain bikers do it, the VW and Transit van owners do it and loads of other groups.

I wonder if it's to help with the effort put in by organisers and make people commit. Often its the same folk that make it happen and everyone else tags along. In NZ, Aus. and USA there is more of a pitch in and help attitude. I think that applies to businesses too. (Not saying there is noone in the UK like that just harder to find)

Some events companies have actually started like this.

Great work with the video Chopcat. The Benny Hill sequence up the canal was a crack up.

The New South Wales, Jervis Bay 2012 Big day out was a fantastic success. There ended up 47 TI's and AI's participating. It was run over a weekend starting on the Saturday afternoon for a sail on St Georges Basin, (the photo above) and Sunday commenced at Vincentia Sailing Club for a sail out past Beecroft Pennsula approx 12Km. Quiet a bit of peddeling was done to get out there, but the return was jibing all the way due a ENEer. There was a fantastic BBQ with the best seafood chowder I have ever had and lucky draw prizes.
It was one of the most impressive sights seeing 47 Island on the water at one time, and one I won't forget.

Here's the video.
