When I have sailed AI's with TI ama on, with good enough wind, I was faster and with a smoother ride than as shipped. Also, the longer hull at waterline, the faster you can go before the bow waves stops you from accelerating further without planing and the extra power that requires. Minor little pluses (fractions of knots) that I'll take any day! :)

But he may well be a better sailor so that's not exactly a scientific comparison.

Adding 5 square feet of sail, albeit a tad higher, isn't likely to account for enough difference to say one boat is necessarily faster than another. And the new AI is heavier so it would seem a wash. Would larger amas, albeit adding more weight but keeping the boat more upright and spilling less air add much speed? Possibly.

Again, I haven't sailed one yet, but I will.

No claims of scientific evidence, still, I would like to think that with the "drastic" changes that Hobie made to the AI, they ought to get something more than a 27# heavier boat. I like Chief's comment that he sailed faster than other AIs around on 2 days. I doubt he would have made the point without saying if he always sailed faster than other AIs. I think he was proud of sailing faster.

Another picture of WT Chief's 2015 AI on a beach near Ft Desoto (near St Petersburg, FL.) Very nice looking.

Also note Chief's new hakas.

It does look really good.
I especially like the new 'raised' bow deck. As well as making for a drier ride, it looks like it would add strength and prevent flexing in that area.
Shame the TI hasn't had the same treatment.

I'm hoping we'll get a full review soon.

I haven't warmed to the bow shape yet. But I'm sure I will. It does look strong but I'd be interested to see where the weakest point is. If you kept increasing ama buoyancy until the amas couldn't submerge and then increase the sail area or the wind strength until something gave……where would that weak spot be. The mast connection assembly, the aka, the aka connection. Dunno. My guess would be the bolts holding down the crossbars.

Either the leeward ama submerges, or the center hull flies, or something lets go. But... if none of the above, then the boat just stays flat and goes faster. I'm hoping for the latter.

More sail. More volume in the main hull / bow. Longer larger amas.

All relate to faster.

The original AI would stuff the nose and amas when loaded up. The 2015 AI feels like it accelerates in puffs where the older AI would stuff.

All in all... my impression was :)

I actually think this looks the most like a giant AI/TI. Notice the reverse rake bow and amas.
