Hello everyone, I recently joined the Hobie nation and for the most part couldn't be happier. My only problem is that my girlfriend is getting beat up in the back seat by the sheet line. She prefers to sit in the back because the majority of the controls, dagger board, furling line, etc are located in the front and she doesn't want to have anything to do with those. I guess my question is, is it by design that the person in backseat is going to get beat up or at least annoyed by the line?

I am hoping that it is just my lack of sailing knowledge and skill that is causing this but it seems that line is almost always hitting her in some way, even when it is furled.

My wife complained about the same thing the other day. She will definitely get the line while furled. The more the sail is unfurled the farther back the line is and the less of a chance she will get hit by it. Warning her of and impending tack/gybe may ease the frustration as well. The other option is to get her acquainted with front seat controls. Then she'll make you sit in the back.

My centerboard usually only goes down then back up once during an outing, so no issue. I ran my furling line to the back seat, so again no issue for the front seat.

You guys are lucky, I taught Angie to Sail, and I haven't been in the front seat since...So I drink coffee and fish. I have learned to either duck or wear my motorcycle helmet on the boat when she is tacking...

I'm slowly getting Jessica up to speed on how the sailing thing works. I put her in the back seat since it's the driest and the least complicated.

When furled or close hauled, the mainsheet is always going to be irritating for anyone sitting in the rear seat. My wife, who also has no interest in sailing, is happy to furl the sail and work the C/B so she usually chooses the front seat.
Short of adding some sort of riser to the aft mainsheet padeye it will always be a problem.
I just look at it as a sailing thing and am thankful it's not a boom!

Thanks, looks like this is acommon problem. I think I am going to try my hand at building one of the roll bars I have seen on a few threads here. I will let you know how it goes.

My husband steers in front and I'm the back seat driver on our new-to-us 2013 TI. We had sailing classes last year on a traditional JY sailboat, and after getting knocked in the head a few times by the boom on that thing, managing to avoid the mainsheet seems a minor price to pay! The only time it poses more than a momentary problem is when we get stuck in the wrong direction highly variable winds and the sail starts luffing wildly. At that point, I try to pull the sail in a more comfortable position until we can either pedal our way through a turn until the wind catches again. Either that or I ask Robert to furl the sail to cut back on the wife abuse. :P

I would highly recommend a basic couples sailing class if you can find one in your area. You'll not only appreciate and enjoy your TI a lot more once you realize how much more comfortable and maneuverable it is over a traditional small sailboat, but you'll both learn some theory that will make it more fun and safe for you both.
