First post on the forum although I did read here extensively prior to purchasing in April. My thanks to all who shared their experiences.

Here’s the current dilemma: I contemplate getting a second one to go out with wife and/or friends but I am have trouble rationalizing the storage and transportation logistics. Let us just say I’m sporting goods heavy and storage light. Amazingly I think there is a HIGH probability someone reading this can empathize. If I’m not the only one in this predicament is there anyone willing to swap access time or maybe a reasonable local rental fee to another AI owner? I am particularly interested in the upstate NY area of Great Sacandaga lake while we are on a late July vacation and an intermittent ongoing basis in the Annapolis/DC area. By habit I’m launching at windsurfing sites I’m familiar with (more suitable to car top than trailer) but if anyone likes the trade of time idea I’m open to meeting up anywhere that would be family friendly while doing my share of shore time (situation description forthcoming). If you are interested send me a note especially when the wind forecast is up. I also have an Old Town Appalachian set-up with airbags I’d let out if anyone wanted to log some tandem whitewater, or even general canoe, time in exchange. Maybe if there are enough people in this situation we could consider a spare boat co-op?

Comments on passengers: The pictures of the tandem rigged seats for kid companion sealed the purchase deal. My wife had been pointing out windsurfing was/is a solo activity (for now) and the 3.5 & 1.5 y.o. boys plus our large lab were not happy when left at home or on the beach with her. It’s been a good purchase. The 3.5 y.o. has been out with me extensively. It’s a great time and his weight doesn’t alter the performance much. I am contemplating getting him geared up to handle the fishing parts; he’s been practicing in the yard. The 1.5 y.o. loves it too although he only gets out close to shore on quiet days w/o sail. The lab despite being a horrible car dog apparently is willing to sign on to all necessary behavior modifications in exchange for being allowed to spend more time on the water. He is beefcake and throws off the trim, noticeably changing the performance. The vet says he looks great at 105 so altering his weight isn’t really an option (he’s tall and muscled up fluctuating between 100 and 115 depending on whether his workouts are more swim or run heavy). With the lab I’ve still got headroom to the total capacity so I’ve contemplated throwing some weight up front to balance the ride out when I’m out with him. Any comments on this as a strategy and how others balance the trim vs. weight tradeoffs? I really struggle to see how any of you are managing a second adult back there without having experimented.

Transporting your AI: Although there are many threads on this I offer a few comments I haven’t seen. Think about where you are going to launch. From the time I’ve spent windsurfing I can tell you that there are some great sailing access points that are incompatible with a trailer. The hullavator has been a good solution for me but it’s not perfect. On the plus side it certainly does speed up loading transitions and I’ve put the speed feet into my factory track so I can get the rack itself on/off the vehicle in under a minute. The minus side I haven’t heard others mention is that if you are parked at an odd angle it doesn’t work properly. Additionally I haven’t weighed all the pieces/parts but I suspect that two hullavators, two AI’s, masts, akas, and amas would put me over the factory track (note that is track not rack) carrying capacity. It is an elegant solution and some engineer may have a huge factor of safety built into that published number but no one is giving it out. Finally if you do get one I’d advise skipping the mail order discount and buying from a merchant with a good return policy. My first one was missing some hardware including one of the rivets. REI swapped it in under 10 minutes.

Final thoughts: We need a mid-atlantic class association, regatta, or festival of some sort. If anyone is taking the initiative I’d throw in a few hours of supporting effort.

Regards,

Rich

Sorry I can't help you Rich as I'm on a rock on the far side of the Atlantic. That said, I think you raise a very interesting idea. I've seen many posts which suggest that a tandem model might be in the works and others where people have opted for 2 x A1's to overcome the apparent 'selfishness' of going it alone!.

I am fascinated that you are able to bring the 3.5 yo with you and wonder how you do so?. Have you rigged one of the amas?

A post some while ago suggested sitting in the back facing rearward which sounds like a good short-term solution. I also wondered if the A1 could tow something comfortably while holding on to the amas. Again, this would just be a short term solution and more of a novelty than a genuine answer.

I spent a whole day towing another person in a kayak from the rear crossbar (I think using the aka would put too much stress on the brace). The wind was about 10kts, so the water was fairly flat. Off-wind, the towing worked wonderfully. However, beating was difficult. The AI already has a pretty high amount of leeway, and anything that keeps it from moving forward smoothly (where the daggerboard gains its best effect) is problematic. Having the towee paddle a bit to get forward momentum going helped a bit, but it ended up being easier to fall off the wind a bit to keep up the speed. In any case, it was a great day, having company over a 6 mile trip. The kayaker would never have done it on his own, and he was close enough that we didn't have difficulty with conversation.

On bringing my older son, 3.5, it's basically the same set-up you see in the other thread photos with the rear seat forward facing. We’ve been out for several hours multiple times. He’s plenty vocal so even though it’s a wet affair there’s no way I’d be unaware if it he were uncomfortable. I’m sure nettles will be a problem in season.

I’ll have to try spinning the idea that a second AI is somehow “less selfish.â€

Check out nauticexpo.com web site. Those are some choices you will like. The $ may change your mind. ie: get to sport trimaran. The Windrider 16 may be your best choice for $ and carrying two or 1.5 persons. AI just won't do it. 1 medium adult and small 15 lb dog. But you will be back to the trailer. The roof rack will be loaded with two AI. Thule rack and pick up truck goal post. Two Hullavators on suv with extra belts to frame / running boards would be safe. Anyway check the Autus trimaran site. Listed family requirments with mention to safety. If $ over 10,000 are in the ball park. I will try the windrider for my next choice. AI pedals are of some use. Need to mix and match. A small Troqueedo motor would be nice to move in and out of dock area. So if Hobie would upgrade a little..keep the pedals improve to Windrider scale...That would be just right for me also.
