I just wanted to post a technique I learned for tacking in choppy seas or higher winds without the drive (since I'm paralyzed I never have the drive in). It works pretty well. After turning into the wind, just when the boat loses momentum, I push the cloth part of the sail at the bottom of the second batten with my hand (the sheet is still cleated in and tight). Pushing the sail into the wind will bring the front of the boat around pretty quickly without having to back and reverse the rudder. If you time it right, the boat stalls very little. Just a word of caution, don't push on the clear part of the sail. Just a little stress will create a crack.

Interesting... Instead of backwinding a jib, you're backwinding the front part of the main. Will have to try it.

What about gybing, I would have thought that would be failsafe?

Geoff.

Yeah, but if the goal is to get upwind, turning all the way around through a jibe downwind kind of hurts your progress.... ;)
