It may seem strange that in six months ownership I have never actually folded the amas against the side of my AI. But now that I am measuring up to construct a new trailer, I did just that. And to the eye, it looks wrong. While there are a few photos with the AI and the amas folded, I have never noticed that the fronts of the amas point decidedly out, and in the case of my boat, the closest the front of the ama will come to the hull, where one is supposed to use the cord to attach the ama, is a gap of 11 to 12 centimeters between the hulls. There is a very small picture in the manual, and it certainly does not look like there is the large gap I am seeing. Surely this is not right? But I cannot see anything that I can change. You can't have the wrong akas fitted, because the back ones are different. And the left hand one holds the paddle, so that defines each quite specifically. I have not heard that the amas are different, but I better go look at that. Geoff. |

When you bungee them they will snug in a bit more, but yes they do point out at the front. Kayaking Bob |

Geoff, What you are describing is normal. Due to the wider hull in the middle the ama's stick out further at the front by quite a bit when folded in. |

Thanks guys, It seems it's normal? Strange that when ever I see a picture of an AI on a trailer, the amas look parallel, or almost so. I will take a picture when I have a chance. How do you fellows get your AI up on the cradles? Do any of you use a winch? Keith |

Hi Guys: I keep both of my AIs (along with 2 Sports) on my trailer and they at first would not fit because of the way the AMA fold. To correct this I simply unattached the rear AKA and let it ride between the hull and AMA. The rear bungee on the AMA attaches to the AKA, and the rear AKA is attached to the hull by an additional bungee. The correction allow the AMAs to ride close to the hull and fit the trailer perfectly. After you launch, it takes a few seconds to reattach the rear AMA/AKA and your on your way. Hi Ray, That is a great idea, and solves two problems, one of wasted space, and probably the other, that the rear of the AMAS is much lower than the hull, and probably with that aka off, it will ride at the same height? I will experiment, but I think that's the better way to trail it. I won't be buying the Hobie cradle, because as I mentioned elsewhere, it costs more than I paid for my trailer, and they want AUS$365 for them. Which is about US$292 Geoff. |
