I went to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to register my new AI, yesterday.

While dealing with the clerk, I told her that this was a unique boat and showed her a picture and wondered if it would be possible to display the registration numbers on the amas instead of the bow of the kayak because it would only meet the requirements for registration if it was fully rigged out in sailing trimaran mode and because the numbers would be more visible out there on the amas.

She couldn't answer the question so she went and got an officer who came up and I briefly asked him about it. He pointed to the bow of the kayak and said, "Put 'em there, do the best you can," turned and walked on back in the office.

Yes sir. There's the word from Texas. Now, how am I going to display those minimum 3" high letter and numbers on the bow. Any fellow Texans got photos of yours?

Bill, in Beaumont

Here in Illinois we have to register our kayaks & AI. They send us the sticker but we are not required to put the 3" numbers on as the motor boats do.

I can't find it but here was a thread a while back about problems registering a boat in Texas. Sounds like Texas DNR aren't very creative in their thinking at times.

I hope this photo works. I finally put registration numbers on my AI. I went with the same colors that are in the Hobie logos so that I could tie it all together and make it look like it was part of the plan. I'm happy with how it worked out.

I had the numbers made up at one of those "quick signs" businesses. For $20-$40 bucks you get better looking numbers than those packages of individual letters and numbers you buy in sporting goods stores. And it's all properly-sized and spaced and can be applied as a unit instead of one character at a time.

I hated to put numbers on the boat but when the Texas Parks and Wildlife Officer says you need to put 'em on, you put 'em on.
