G'day all

Dumb questions for the TI crew out there;

When rigging the furling sail on the TI, is it done in such a way that it is controlled from both positions through two sets of cleats?

If so, How does the furling and reefing perform, eg, if the forward cockpit cleats the sail in, can the rear un-cleat?
and;
How much drag is on the furling line from the rear ?

If you sail the TI solo, do you rig for one cockpit and are then forced to use that cockpit until such time that it is re-rigged ?

I guess I am asking because I still have not seen one up close and I have read different one's commenting about the how to of the rigging of the lines.

Elm,

The tandem only comes with one cleat for the furling line and that cleat is on the front AKA brace. I sail my TI from the rear so I added a small wedge under the cleat to tilt it forward to make it easier to control from the rear. The drag on the line doesn't change.

Some people have added hardware to allow them to cleat it in the rear. I suggest you search the Forum for the threads that explain all this. (I will probably add this to my boat.)

If you rig your mainsheet for a 2 to 1 mechanical advantage one end of the sheet ends up cleated in the rear cockpit and one in the front. If you are sailing from the rear and want to transfer control to the front you need to release the sheet in the rear to allow enough line out to allow the person in front to control the sail. It's the reverse to transfer control back to the person in the rear.

If you rig your boat for a 3 to 1 mechanical advantage one end of the sheet is tied to the block that is connected to the sail and the other end is run to either the front or rear cockpit. To change who has control requires that you re-run the sheet and probably would be a real pain to do on the water.

I have sailed my TI both ways and found that when rigged for 3 to 1 there is too much line in your lap when sailing close to the wind. In my opinion, as long as you're strong enough 2 to 1 is the way to go.

Hope this helps.

Elm and Dosjers;

The only thing I would add is when sailing from the rear seat I tie the furling line to the end of the main sheet, that way I can always reach it.

Thanks dojers, I am assuming when you refer to 2to1 and 3to1, the 2to1 is the standard rigging similar to the AI and 3to1 someone is fitting a 3to 1 block off the starboard handle and sheet hook ?

If not I have to start looking a little harder!!

Everything you need to do the 3 to 1 is included with the TI. Also, instructions should have been included in the packet with the boat to re-route the sheetline.

I'm new to TI and sailing in general, I'm assuming when you're referring to the 2to1 and 3to1, its something to do with the ratio of the lines (the amount of pull required and/or effort)?

I got the instructions (in my owners pack) to convert my TI from 2to1 into a 3to1, but not really sure what advantage/disadvantage that will give me.

Yes Hammer it's referring to the amount weight needed to pull something.

If you were to reef a sail and it weighed 12 pound at 1to1, then at 2to1 you would be only pulling 6 pound and 3to1 3 pound, the downside is the amount of rope needed to pull it the same distance because at 3to1 you pull 3 times as much rope.

So a sail set with a 3to1 pull, it will be easier to pull the sheet out in heavy winds and to fine tune it, but it will take longer to pull it all the way out because you will have to reef 3 times the rope and then have it all sitting in your foot well or lap.

Yes I do that with the AI as well.

Thanks for the run down guys, I do have to get in and have a look at the tandem and even better catch a ride with someone. was just curios as to how they are supposed to rig and how they are being rigged.

How many of you are going 3to1 compared to the 2to1, any idea ?

Elm,

I don't know where you are either but I'm in the Jacksonville/St. Augustine part of Florida and would be happy to take you out on my TI.

Larry,

Do you sail much during the week or only on weekends? I'd like to get over to your part of Florida and do some sailing but it's easier for me to do it mid-week. Any interest in getting together?

Dosjers; I am a Controls Engineer 45 to 50 hours a week. All I have is the weekends but would love to show off this part of Florida. Open to about any weekend or if we can set it up ahead I could use some of my vacation.

Guys, thanks so much for the offers, very much appreciated but it's just a little out of the way having to come from Melbourne, Australia :lol: Mind you if I start sailing the AI now, I might make it by owwww :roll: :roll: Next Christmas 8) :lol:

One of the members to another forum we have down here has just bought one so once the back is a little better I will tap him on the shoulder.

Thanks again though :wink:

Larry,

What's better for you? We're going to California for Christmas but after that I could probably talk the wife into a weekend in your area (she sails an AI) or we could schedule something during the week. I am an independent insurance adjuster and lately I have been working about 2 hours every two months so I have lots of time.

Let me know.

Have a merry Christmas!
