Post subject:  How are the amas built ?
Hello everyone,
One question : what's inside the amas ? Is there any sort of material that could retain water ?
I'm asking the question because at the end of my last session, I noticed that one ama was heavier than the other, and my father did too (he had come to pick me up and helped me disassembling). I initially thought "no bid deal, some water will just have crept in" but to my surprise there wasn't. And now I find the two amas weight roughly the same but I wouldn't swear they have not taken some weight.
Am I dreaming ? Is there any foam in there ?

I looked inside mine yesterday. While it's hard to see past the first "hole", it looked pretty empty to me. At least after I let the water out. I don't think I tightend the bung enough, so a small amount of water got in.

One of mine takes about a cup or two of water in after about 4-5 hours of sailing. I can hear it moving around inside the ama freely and have no trouble draining it in about 30 seconds. I believe they are completely hollow.

Post subject:  Use 'Marine Goop' around Ama Bungee fittings
A while ago, I also discovered that there was some water inside my amas.
I carefully checked that the ama-aka 'sockets' weren't cracked.
I also visually checked that the two drain plug o-rings on each ama were
lubed with silicon grease and carefully retightened.
I found water again after a couple of hard sailings.

I then realized that there were four bungee 'sockets' in each ama.
The bungee cord is fed through their fittings into the amas but the socket hole
is slightly larger than the diameter of the bungee cord. Each time a large
wave passed over the ama, there was enough water pressure to squirt
a small amount of water into it.

I smeared a small bead of Marine Goop around the bungee at the hole while
the bungee was under tension holding the ama to the akas.
I have had no noticeable water in either ama since then.

The Marine Goop is flexible enough so that if I have to replace a bungee
it will be quite easy to peel the Goop off.

The amas are made just like the main hull... rotomolded. They are hollow. Be sure the drain hole is clear / not blocked. It is always possible for hulls to vary in weight depending on the amount of material poured into the mold. This is measured carefully, but who knows?

I will definitely keep an eye on that and methodically check all the points mentionned, and most probably use the product indicated byTidalwave.
