Roller maiden voyasge

I launched at Waldringfield and ventured up the river Deben..

Seemed a bit windy at home in Ipswich, but I'd had enough waiting , I had to get out on the water. Funny it wasn't or at least didn't seem as windy on the water..

I rigged the Hobbie Adventure Island with one outrigger, I thought I'd get to grips with the vessel before I'd embarked on sailing. In this configuration it was extremely stable, I also took the outrigger off and used the AI in basic yak mode, a bit of a wobble, but then I'm a newb, and I had been
pedalling around most of the day with one outrigger, one thing I did notice the yak was very fast in yak mode, very fast!!

High tide was around 3pm, I thought I'd have a bit of fun and see just how fast I could go into the wind and against the tide [1 pm 2 hours till high tide] a chap I have seen before came alongside in his motor boat and clocked me at 4 knots, not saying I could keep that kind of pace up for long , but 2 knots into the wind and tide would have been a sinch..

I'm chuffed with today, and my new chosen sport. I took as many precautions as I knew, paddle plan, PFD, anchor and kept fairly close to shore.I was on the water for 4 hours, I practiced padelling, and a man overboard re-entry twice. Getting into the yak was ok but like all things new could do and will do more practice, padelling is harder than it looks , again more practice. I guess it's all about practice.......


Got home checked my yak and gear, rinsed her down and put her to bed

Looking forward to my next practice session, then it's sailing, then fishing!!

Congrats. on your AI

The "bit of a wobble" is the primary stability. Try leaning over next time and you'll see the strong secondary stability of the Adventure which is the more important one.

One thing to try for reentry with at least one aka/ama on, is to turn your back to the hull near the aka and use your arms slightly behind you (one on the hull gunnel, the other on the aka, NOT the crossbrace) to lift your butt clear of the water and over the side, into the yak. If your arms are strong enough, it works great and is quick.

Nice one Roller! I haven't gotten round to trying mine in its kayak form yet. I may give it a go this weekend.

Good one Roller. I haven't gotten round to get out of my seat, gett'n wet, and get back in. Keep say'n I will, but the water's still a bit chilly here in Oz. Although last weekend I was start'n to wish I had as I was rid'n some waves back home and the nose started to dive.

Has anyone tried to right it, fully rigged after a 180 degree capsize ? I've read the manual, that should be enough.

P.S. Just incase you don't know, you don't need to rinse off the sail. I think we have consensis on that. If not this thread may go on ....and on.....and on.....

I rinse about every 3rd outing, for two reasons:

1. I'm out a couple times a week (working on 3/week)

2. More often than not, the wind is too strong when we land and it's unsafe to unroll the sail.

Forgetting about the manual also, and going out without the amas or coming back in without them.Or no matter how you sail/peddle it. If you are entering a harbor in rough weather with waves 3-4ft? Turn the Island around facing the waves. Let them push you in backwards. Peddle the drive and A.Island perpindicular to the waves while being pushed backwards. I did this during a hurricane. Cedar Beach-Mt Sinai N.Y.

3-4ft WAVES! At the entrance to a harbor! Here, we surf them little ones in!

Maybe a 3-4ft shore break I'd be more concerned with.

Not big on measuring wave heights reconlon but you get the basic idea...
if the waves are too high or unsurfable tis best to come in backwards...

Dont knock it till you have to try it...
