The recent thread which describes changes in the 2010 AI mentions
expandable seat pegs. I talked to my Hobie dealer...he knew nothing
about new seat pegs...but thought that it was a great idea.
My 2009 AI seat has NEVER stayed in place! Just placing the seat
into the AI and the seat pegs pop out of their holes, any body movement also causes the pegs to pop out.

Does anyone know the part number for the new seat pegs?
I assume that from the description...they should fit the older 2009 seats (I hope).

81265101 PLUG-IN SEAT CONNECTOR KIT ADJ (PAIR) $9.95 LIST

They are in stock with Hobie should ship immediately, I know its going to be a stocking item in out store and would assume most others too.

You may have to enlarge the seat peg mounting holes. Otherwise, they should fit fine. 8)

Why is that I never find out from Hobie or my dealer about new products?
I made up my own tramps because nothing was listed in the 'newest' catalogs,
but a forum member mentioned them including parts number. My dealer then contacted
Hobie and I got my tramps in a couple of weeks.
I didn't know that Hobie was selling the expandable seat pegs until a forum member
mentioned them as an aside to the 2010 model. It turns out that some owners
were already purchasing and installing the new pegs before my dealer even knew
that Hobie had them for sale.
I know that it is expensive for Hobie to print up new catalogs...
but it would nice if someone from Hobie could put a 'new parts' topic area in the
forum and keep it up to date.
I don't need a complete catalog every six months...but could use an update page displayed
once in awhile!

Dealers recive notice about the time they announce it here. We've know about these for about a week or so.

The problem is...I don't remember the last time Hobie on this forum announced a
new item...before several forum members casually mentioned something new.

The tramps were 'announced' by several forum members who had somehow found
out about them being available, bought and installed them, and raved on the forum
about how great they were. I had to inform my dealer that the tramps were being
sold and what the parts number was.

The same has occurred with the expandable seat pegs...

I just suggested that it would be nice if the Hobie Forum had a topic area where Hobie
could announce to AI owners, at the same time they inform their dealers, new items
which they might wish to buy.

If Hobie is informing all their dealers at the same time...why is my dealer in the 'dark'
time after time? If it is my dealer's fault on not staying current...it would be nice
if Hobie could inform AI owners directly via this forum.

Both my Jax and Daytona dealer seem to have similar blind spots on brand new products or procedures. But neither of them are exclusively Hobie and sell other kayaks and all kinds of stuff. Jax BCO for instance has a complete line of outdoor stuff. So, most of the sales clerks know little to nothing of Hobie products. Finding the "manager in charge of all things Hobie" helps.

Still, I too have surprised dealers with printouts from the forum about parts or free upgrades. Chalk it down to human nature of things and how I bet most store managers are overworked.

"New items available" are one of the biggest reasons I drop by the forum here on almost a daily basis :P

Yep, hard to get the dealers attention sometimes. We send bulletins and catalogs. They have a lot going on. Let alone get the info down the line to the staff on the shop floor. Forums are great for this.

Here is the expandable peg in action:

I've just fitted the upgraded expandable seat pegs and can report they are a worthwhile accessory that stops the seat slippage problem. 8)
They can be retrofitted to older seats but as RR reported above you will need to enlarge the screw hole in the seat pad to enable the larger expandable peg stem to fit. A soldering iron works well for this. If you are using the i-comfort pad as well as the standard pad you will need to compress the layers so that the split ring fits into its hole. I had an assistant push down with a screwdriver on the washer.
On one of my hulls it was difficult to get the peg tight as it kept rotating. Pre-tightening the peg a bit so that it was a tight fit going into the hole fixed that.
The split ring that is used to tighten the peg is not easy to grip and gets uncomfortable as it tightens up. Some carefuly applied heatshrink helps.

Thanks Stringy but no thanks. Hardwood dowels don't slip and automatically tighten without the need for heat shrink. Just add water.....Pirate :P

I have been stung by dealers for announcing items that are new before available and before they are fully aware of the item. We now announce to dealers when the parts become available... and then (delayed) to the forums. The good dealers hate to be informed by their customers about new stuff they didn't hear about yet. It is a tough balance for me. Forums are a great way to spread the new information, but they are also problematic.

A difficult position Matt. Personally I would like to hear about anything new on here as soon as possible. I wouldn't want to rely on the dealers. The sooner we know about mods or improvements, the better position we are in to make the judgement calls on whether to buy now or wait a bit longer. I can understand people being pissed off if they have just purchased, only to find a newer product has now superceded it, but, you can't odds that, it is the same no matter what you are buying, be it a computer, car etc.

Excellent tips stringy as always! BTW, for someone without an appropriate punch or soldering iron, you can heat up a machine screw of similar diameter and get a nice custom hole. A good aim helps here. If any plastic residue makes the material too think, simply mash it with a hammer.8)
