AI Dagger Boards--new and old

I happened to have both a new and an old dagger board. Before getting the new one, I was a bit confused. Here is a picture:


The new (black) board weighs more than the old: 1075 gm (2.34 lbs) vs 820 gm (1.81 lb) Since my kitchen scale only goes up to 1000 gm, I'm not sure how accurate the heavier, black board weight is, but that is what the scale registered.

I've seen a white dagger board, about 2 yrs ago. I don't know where that fits into this.

Matt Miller has said on this forum that the new board is stronger than the old fiberglass board. Others claim the new board allows the AI to point higher into the wind.

The white daggerboard was cheaper but heavier than the grey. It was what you got if you ordered the Adventure DB option.
I solely use the black DB now.
It is more robust and seems to offer greater stability when sailing in kayak mode. It also fits into the front 8" hatch easier and you don't have to worry about the protective cover ( which you don't get anymore, I think?)

Yes, Stringy, I was aware of the older thread. That thread put me on notice about what the "new" board should look like. I recently purchased a "new" dagger board from a reliable internet store, but they sent the old one. When I talked to them they immediately sent out the "new" one w/o giving me a hard time. That is how I happened to have both, so I thought I would just take a picture so people could easily see the difference.

and i have an 2008 AI will the new dagger board fit/ is it worth getting?

Captain Yoars, Nice picture. I have not seen a jib fitted to the AI before. It is clearly a Hobie product. Did you fit it yourself?

Yes i took a standard hobie kayak sail and modified it into a jib

I have no idea, since I haven't used the new one yet. I get the impression from K-Bob's (Hawaii) few comments and a comment from Matt, that the new one is significantly better. Worth buying if you have a "good" old one--probably would not be for me, but that is a personal opinion.

Just personally I woudnt say Significant, it may be more effective but I doubt if anyone can produce hard evidence to prove anything beyond subjective personal opinion.
I know one Hobie dealer who is not convinced there is any performance improvement, yes it has slightly more area, but it is also more flexible.

Doesn't matter anyway, the new one is the only style you will be able to procure shortly.
