I couldn't understand the blue sail with the dune color either - but was so happy to have a color choice that included a DUNE trimaran, I didn't want to seem unappreciative.

Since I've already voiced an opinion (with several others) in earlier threads (viewtopic.php?f=71&t=19882&start=15 for example), I'll just say, "Thanks" to Hobie
(...and then hope they correct their oversight by the time I need a new sail.)

I think the blue splash looks good, breaks up the drab/plain dune. I do think the dune looks good but it would be very plain if the whole thing was the same colour, or two neutral colours.

Can I ask what the price of the current model is?..it might make my decision a lot easier on whether to wait or not.

That caught my eye as well. I don't remember seeing that in the 2010 literature.

I thought all the masts were carbon fiber? If it isn't CF what is it.

My 2010 is definately CF reinforced Fiberglass. It conducts electricity...

Not that I intend on being out in electrical storms, or any storm for that matter, what would/should you do in such an event?

Your awfully exposed in the cockpit of an Island

Pray!

But seriously, while praying, if you have any wire aboard, wrap a few turns around the base of the mast and let the free end dangle over the side into the water. Failing wire, I'd even give a bit of wet line a go.

Stow away any fishing rods - better that the mast get the hit, than rods closer to you.

Move to the rear away from the mast if you can, and don't hang onto wet sheets &/or furling lines that connect to the mast.

Sail and/or pedal like crazy, preferably in a direction away from the worst of the storm if at all possible, while still heading for shore .

remove the mast and lay it down next to you......or even hang it under water to be really really sure

I have to agree with Max, PRAY, and I'm not a religious person.

A few years ago my wife and I were thinking about long distance cruising on a large sailboat. In preperation I read everything I could find regarding lightening hitting boats, how to prevent it, and how to minimize the damage and injury. The conclusion I came to was that if it's going to hit you you're screwed. There isn't any full proof method to protect yourself.

If I get caught out in it I would head as fast as I can to shore then drop my mast. It's a catch 22, if you drop your mast while at sea you loose the ability to sail which would move you a lot faster than peddling.

Best thing is to listen to the MARINE weather forecast, keep an I on the skies, and get the heck out of Dodge if you even think you see a thunderstorm in the area.

Monitor the NOAA weather reports - before it happens!

If too late = Rubber gloves + booties + undies.

Reef. And don't hold the sheet!

Avoidance should definitely be your main consideration. Numero uno!

When I was sailing in the 48' yacht my Dad and I built, we'd clamp thick wire ropes (which we had ready for that purpose) to each sidestay and hang them over the side. Many other cruising yachts did the same. We only heard about one yacht that got hit; apparently the bolt fried the mast top electronics, but no other damage or harm was done, not even to electronics below deck.

Dropping the mast whilst at sea could be contentious. You might be transferring the point of likely contact to somewhere else on the boat, even your head. But that's just conjecture on my part. My instinct would be to leave it up, and get the hell outa there, fast.

We were out last weekend and were able to sail around some very *dark* clouds, but luckily didn't see any actual lightning. It was very much on our minds though. In the TI you are kind of screwed - taking down the mast relieves you of propulsion and makes your head the highest thing on the water, and your feet will still be on the metal mirage drive that is in contact with the water.

Best to avoid bad weather in the TI, or in any small boat for that matter.

Remember, this boat is plastic after all. Lightning hits this puppy and I bet things are going to melt no matter what you do!
