I, too, have heard murmurings of a foiled yak coming next year. However, I'd be hard pressed to buy one. Most of the places we sail to are in areas of choppy water with about 1 - 3 foot swells or more. From what I've seen of the foiling videos, the foils don't work very well outside of specific conditions (low waves, steady winds above 7 knots, etc).

If Hobie can produce one that works in all conditions as well as the current TI (minus the rudder issues), and offers foils to use in appropriate conditions - then maybe I'd be interested.

I like the speed of them, but I don't want to be restricted in where or when I can sail it due to the addition of foils.

I contacted a foil manufacturer (Fastcraft hydrofoils http://www.fastacraft.com/gallery.html ) in Perth, Australia not all that long ago and here was his response;
Quote:
Hi Eddie
Unfortunately I do not think that the Hobie AI will have enough power or performance to get flying.
I have attached our price list for available moulded foils.

Still think  about it every now and then  , cannot afford to try :( so I keep the Email and just go back when I do start thinking, to slow me down again

Mind you his carbon fiber foils do look sweeeeeeeeeeeet

TI: One foil in each drivewell (inserted from underneath, with a support against the hull), one on each ama?

Check out pages 20 to 23 Adventure Island and TI with a Dune Hull and Blue Sail.

Glad Hobie did it. Thanks.

Hollgi, I'm just waiting for one of our adventurous members to try adding a whopping big headsail on a bowsprit, plus hydrofoils on the amas and main hull, and play at being L'Hydroptere.
Might have an effect on the Hobie warranty though.

After reading the new brochure... the AI gets "an upgraded rudder and rudder assembly" but no mention of improvements/modifications/changes to the TI rudder?

I heard the 2011 AI was getting the TI rudder and mounting bracket....hopefully it suits the AI better, and they use the longer bolts for the mounting bracket :) a pin that breaks before the rudder would be nice too...

Actually some club members brought up some good points. Can't hobie design a rudder breakaway system that is based on a tensioning device? If the forces overcome the tension it pops loose. You could adjust the tension via knobs or whatever. I think they were referring to building something that works like an outrigger release clip, but designed for a rudder assembly. I'll have to find the device they were talking about, I think it's also used as a flat line clip to keep lines closer to the water. If a fish strikes it pops the clip open.

"Re-designed rudder control" (handle)
"New deck-mounted, die-cast, detachable Aka II crossbars"??
"Unbolt the akas and amas"??
"Two-piece carbon fiber mast" (TI)

Hmm... Well the aka crossbars even on the older model is "detachable".
Just grab an allen wrench and unbolt it.

In the text is say "unbolt the aka and ama and have a super fun kayak"

So maybe there is no real change there except they are using the fast clip "knuckle" connector that the TI uses I guess the type of aka is called Aka 2.

I have always disliked having the aka braces on the AI when using it in kayak mode (more weight, in the way ect) but I was always too lazy to bother unbolting those crossbars.

Maybe Hobie now has an easier bolting system for the aka braces?

Good that they did the dune, but I don't understand the blue sail with it. The grey one looks so much neater...

The people have spoken & Hobie have listened - dune AI in the mix at last. Good one Hobie. Might be just about time for me to upgrade, from my 2008 AI dune into a 2011 one!

Really? I actually like them being there. The added weight is irrelevant on water I reckon, and actually somewhat handy for fishing applications.

Eitherway, I wouldn't be getting into the habit of unbolting the crossbar. The chance of threading that brass thread is high enough to make it something you'd want to do as least as possible I think. Anyway, the new crossbar is a little less awkward in shape.

I hope the new AI has the same setup with the aka's and aka connectors that the TI does. That would mean the amas could be folded back (or forward) without dragging in the water.
