Post subject:  Safety- what do I need?

As I prepare to purchase a TI, I am wondering what else one might need to make sure that you are "safe" while sailing this thing on a big body of water?

Obviously a PFD... Any thoughtsbon what else I might need?

Good question!

Here's a start:

Bow line
Throwrope
an EPIRB
a Marine radio (and Family radio if I'm with others to talk)
a leash for everything, including a surfboard leash for Me!
a hand pump and sponge
a throw-rope bag (and bow line)
a flashlight and an emergency strobe lite (Signal Miror)
full tool kit (http://www.hobiecat.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=71&t=8424& post is for the AI)
spare parts especially rudder pins(http://www.hobiecat.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=10418&highlight= post is for the AI)
first aid kit
a spare paddle (single for me) and a spare Mirage drive
2x the drinking water I think I'll need (Camelback)
extra change of cloths and wind breaker to cover up with, space blanket
extra snacks

That is a great list for starters, Bob!

I have one small suggestion regarding the EPIRB or PLB. I have an epirb, but only take it if I am doing a solo, multiday camp/sailing trip--like soloing along the coast of the Everglades in FL.

My epirb/plb substitute is the much more useful SPOT (http://www.findmespot.com/en/) My SPOT, now 2 yrs old, goes with me everywhere--sailing, kayaking, road trips, trips to Mexico and China, etc. I use it to send "I'm OK" messages from my AI, from the dash of my car in Yellowstone Nat'l Park, travelling down the Yangtze River on a cruise, etc. The "OK" messages go to my wife (she is often with me), children, some relatives, and a few friends. These "OK" messages have been close to 100% successful. I've never had to use the "911" message (sent when you are in a life-threatening situation,) but people have used it with good success. You do need to buy an annual subscription from the SPOT people--$100/yr, I believe.

There are traditionalists that insist an epirb/plb is the only way to go. That is their choice. For me, my SPOT has been a terrific device.

Spot is good for the mainland, but doesn't work in Hawaii.

Whoa! Doesn't work in Hawaii?? Why not? It operates by sending signals to satellites. Does Hawaii have satellite shield over it?

As I said, I've used SPOT in Mexico and China. Doesn't work in Hawaii??

ChrisJ your arrow is a little low, but great visual post anyhow. Look for the string of islands in the dark gray area above your arrow.

Good observation, Chris.

OK, it doesn't work in HA--better bring my epirb/plb when sailing from the mainland to Hawaii.

Trsdx - Where will you be sailing?

I'll primarily be sailing on Lake Leelanau in Northern Michigan... The whole lake is 8000 acres. But the North lake where I'll really be is 4500 acres. Thee is the possibility that I'll also be sailing on Lake Michigan because it is so close. It is directly adjacent to lake leelanau.

Excluding Hawaii, Magdagascar, South Georgia, and South Africa, SPOT coverage looks pretty good for AI/TI sailors.

In the past year, 3 professional football players went out of Tampa, FL, to fish. The weather report was not good. A wave capsized their boat. Their boat was located about 3 days later--2 of them had drifted away from the boat and perished. If they had a SPOT (or epirb/plb), they would all be here today. Just one piece of anecdotal evidence.
