In due respect for Flaneur I will refrain from posting further in this thread my opinions of what should have/ shouldn't have / might have / could have / will have / or must have's ... until he has notified Hobie, through the channels Matt has suggested and determined a course of action - or at the least, he receive's an offer from Hobie on any plan they have to help him through this predicament.

Fyi..

Warnings are in the catalog.

Instructions for cart use has warnings as well. Last edited in 2009: http://static.hobiecat.com/web_uploads/2010/12/15/80044201.pdf

Dealer tech bulletin was sent by me last night to reinforce the care needed in using scupper carts.

A cart use FAQ was added to the kayak faq: http://www.hobiecat.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=33397

We have previously suggested additions to the manuals for cart issues. This takes time to work through the system.

We will add a another use instruction to the carts themselves.

Well done, Matt. In my opinion, your link above to the FAQ section clearly states and illustrates how to use the cart to avoid damage to the scupper holes.

Hobie has now probably reduced to zero any possibility of a successful lawsuit regarding punctured scupper holes using the cart.

I suggest, Matt, that Hobie also do the right thing by reinforcing the scupper holes so that this "accident" cannot happen. If it cost the consumer $50/boat more, so be it.

Personally, I don't use the scupper-hole cart--I guess this puts me in Augus' camp of not going someplace that might cause me a problem. I do have an under the boat cart. I even use it occasionally.

We have been... and are looking at ways to change the process to strengthen scuppers. Remember, this is not new. Scupper are unchanged in the industry... not solution has been found by us or competitors as yet. I think we have some good ideas though and will be doing some testing.

That's good, Matt. My suggestion mentioned earlier is pretty simple--mold the scupper holes larger, and insert strong, puncture-proof inserts. If you did that, I might buy a Hobie cart; but, my solution probably cannot be retrofitted to older boats.

Of course, there is also the suggestion by Kayaking Bob, I believe, for reinforcing the scupper holes with a splint applied from inside the boat. That might fix the boats in existance.

I must apologize for straying off the subject in my previous posts. But after reading Flanuer’s initial post, the thoughts of it happening in my situation seems even more probable. I solely rely on a Hobie cart to transport my TI through uneven terrain. I knew of the carts warnings previously and took care while installing and using. But after this post, it affirms that damaging scupper holes can easily happen to a TI and with very little noticeable indication.

So here I go inspecting the scupper holes on my TI. Thankfully, I found no indication of damage; but, it got me looking into fortifying the area. I measured the rear scupper tubes and were roughly 1.5” in diameter and about 3.75” in length. The forward scupper tubes seem to be of the same diameter and shorter but I could not reach it to get a very accurate measurement. My plan is to use silicone as an adhesive gasket. And reinforce each scupper tubes with a plastic tubing splint and stainless steel hose clamps as mentioned previously by Kayaking Bob in this thread.

I’ll post this effort in a separate thread.

Aloha,

Cliffs2yak

Thin, stainless steel scupper inserts.
Glued in place.
A simple and inexpensive solution.

Please send all residual checks to NOHUHU.

I'm very late to this party.

In rough following sea taking on water.

C2y afterpumping out of the center hatch and using a towel wrapped around the pump shaft to try and keep incoming water out I came up with the idea of a fitting that fits the pump shaft.

Go here. Do not use the first location. I'm using the cup holder.

Jerry,

How I wish that were true; but, alas, I've put my age on record once before on this forum. And, let me say, unless you have arrived by some time capsule, you are not my father, not even close.

Keith

Well Keith I'll be 64 in a couple weeks so now I'm on record too.

Remeber the only way you can prevent getting older is to die. I'll take getting older.
