Post subject:  Question for Tandem Island Owners (Hull Lift Handles)

I’ve got a ’09 AI and I’m wondering about installing a pair of TA hull lift handles to help in the handling during car topping. I haven’t seen a TA in person just yet.

Are these handles located over a relieved area of the hull that helps your hand fit underneath the handle, or are they mounted over a flat surface?

Are the handles stiff and rigid, or soft enough so that the handle arch can be made higher over a flat surface if need be?

What is the mounting screw center-to-center distance?

Thanks in advance for your help.

peeper

All the Hobie molded handles I have seen so far require a special recess in the hull and would not work on the pre 2011 AI's.

But you could put strap handles along the gunwale- and on the ridge directly behind the seat. This could help.

What vehicle are you loading up?

A better handle to use might be the ama handles.

Another 'bonza' suggestion Bob. Oh and happy 'Australia Day' (January 26th) everyone. It's a holiday here and a perfect excuse for another Hobie adventure tomorrow, not that an excuse is needed at any time....Pirate

Cheers then Pirate, and to all our mates down under...

Hope you have a dry and sunny holiday. After all the foul weather and flooding, you deserve it.

Thanks for your kind thoughts Nohuhu and I also hope the affected residents can get some respite today but not needed on me as in my area of our great land of Australia it's been as warm and dry as a dead dingo's donga...LOL...Pirate

On a Chevy Tahoe, usually along with 2 sea kayaks placed on edge using Yakima Stackers.

Been using these for a while now already. I’m hoping to find a rigid handle that won’t flex as much as the ama handles do.

Or maybe just a pair of stainless handles sold in marine stores for regular boats. you would need to screw them into or through a large block under the skin to spread the load out....Pirate

Peeper, to be clear, the TI handles do flex somewhat and are VERY comfortable. But they have very little clearance under the grip.

If the ends were bolted closer together, it might just raise the handle a bit but that would introduce a lot of stress on the hull and grip. Your dealer should have one laying around and could help you figure out if it's really possible.
