I'm looking at google earth and I see an inside passage on the shore of Delaware (ocean side). I was thinking of doing the Chesapeake all the way but this seems like an interesting alternative.

Anyone tried it or lives there and knows if it's feasible?

Rene,

How are you doing??? I have not seen a report on your site since NC.

I have sailed the DELMARVA ocean side up to Ocean City. Plenty of god's country there. North of Ocean City there is Assawoman Canal by Fenwick Island. That goes into Indian River Bay => Rehoboth Bay => Lewes Rehoboth Canal will put you at the mouth of the Delaware River. I have thought about this because at one time I wanted to circle the entire DELMARVA Peninsula.

Good luck on your trip.

I'm at Oriental right now. I'll be posting as soon as I can work on the pictures.

That's great that they have a canal for that part. I see a lot of water before Ocean City as well. My GPS does show a lot of navigational aid for those parts. It's just a bit strange that no one seems to know of that passage.

The Oceanside inner coastal waterway is not used by any of the big boats that go South for the winter. The channel is too shallow and has low bridges. You will have to slip the mast out a few times in the canal. I have not done the upper part past Ocean City and would like to see some pictures. When you cross the Chesapeake you can camp on the south end of Mockhorn Island. There is a old abandoned Hunt Club there. You can see the roof of the barn as you get close. Watch out for clam farms. They are sunken cages all up the eastern shore. usually in the shallows.

I heard the passage is called the Virginia Pass. I saw charts and all. It's quite feasible. I am more and more looking at the Chesapeake though. Wondering if I'll be missing something... I'll have to make a decision soon.

I crossed the Albemarle sound yesterday with a norther wind... took me 5 hours to cover the 15 miles of the long way across. I could have gone left or right of the Alligator river to get a more manageable crossing but I wanted to try the long one. I was a bit hairy when the northern wind picked up. As you probably know the AI is not stellar going upwind and you basically have to pedal the entire way up. I still covered over 40 miles that day, most of it pedaling. I got to Coinjock just before sundown. I put my tent on a barge. The guy had waved at me on the way and offered. It saved me a 5 mile hike in the dark to an unknown campsite...

I'll be here for three days since it's all northern winds...

Rene,

I see that you are sticking to the ICW channel. Sometime the road less traveled is the one more adventuresome. The Currituck Sound is one place like that. You are heading into the Norfolk industrial belt. Once you pass Great Bridge locks you will have quite a distance of Miliraty and industrial waterfront. Are you going up the western or easern side of the bay?

I am now tempted by the west side of Chesapeake and the Virginia Pass. I have no idea what to expect if I go into the Chesapeake. I'm sort of tired of military zones. It seems that's all I've seen for the last month.

My only concern with the Virginia pass is the crossing of the Delaware River (13 miles). Maps show a complete passage through the swamps and an ocean side passage can be done since there are plenty of inlets.

BTW, Where can I stop around Norfolk?

Rene,

First Landing State Park in Virginia Beach has Camping. Located just past the Lynnhaven inlet. You do have a ~13 mile crossing accross the Chesapeake. If the winds is from the east you will get swells coming from the Ocean. I aim for the bridge in front of Fisherman's Island. Tuck into the Virginia Pass ICW west of Fisherman's and Mochorn is ~2 miles up. If you decide to go the Chesapeake Route, Kiptopeke State Park is also ~ 2 miles up the Chesapeake. If you go up the Chesapeake remmember the Chesapeake/Delaware Canal. This is a big ship channel with high banks. No wind. Delaware river is very industrial at that point until you reach Cape May...

I will be sailing my hybiscus Tandem Island, Saturday out of the Lynnhaven. If you are crossing that day give me a call and I can accompany you part of the way. (757) 639-8453...
