I like the simplicity of a flag, as it avoids the cost and special care required for a delicate wind vane!
Will give that a try and see how it compares, functionally.

I have caused no damage to my masthead indicator from storing it in the plastic container along with caps, sunnies etc in my car.

Unlike a flag, an indicator doesn't flutter, and with refective tspe on the underside, works just as welll in the dark. No-brainer for me...

Love the flag! I shopped for a precision wind indicator and came to the conclusion that the way we pull the boat in and out of the water, its lifespan would be too short to make it a worthwhile investment.

A pennant would probably be a good enough choice for the kind of recreational sailing we do. Heck, my husband takes that saying about the direction of the wind quite literally. Once we've cleared the docks and moored boats, he typically lets out the sail and points the boat in the path of least resistance -- and greatest speed. Those mirage drives kind of spoil you, knowing you can get back no matter where the wind takes you going out!
