| Post subject: | TI prototype jib size ? |
I was told there was someone from the Hobie company sailing a TI at the Everglades Chalenge race, the boat had a prototype experimental jib. Does anyone know the measuments and area size of this jib? |

Gil, The Hobie engineer/designer Jim Czarnowski can be seen in a post of mine. http://www.hobiecat.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=71&t=34266 He is sitting on a Hobie AI tandem and you can see a furled jib. The photo was taken at last year's EC. My guess is he will be at the EC2012 (Mar 2-3 in Ft Desoto State Park) and will probably be sporting a jib again. Are you planning to be there? Keith |

I had a jib on my TI last year. I used a Newport 16 jib that fit very well. You can probably look up the dimensions on line. Unfortunately i sold my Newport. Don't forget to use some kind of stays and only in light weather. The mast support will get overloaded... Look 6:11 minutes into this video... Keith I do not plan to be at the EC, the reason I ask is because I have a sewing machine and planing to make a jib for use in light winds as suggested by Paul. I have a good idea for a rotating mast top device for the jib forestay. I guess the size of the TI jib prototype is a well kept secret. I will look up the jib on the Newport 16 but having the Hobie jib size would take out all the guess work.  Gil |

I actually made a new jib for my TI out of a old main sail that I had. It is not as nice as the Newport Jib because the main was slightly blown out. I do find it easier to cut down a old sail instead of starting from scratch. You already have the curvature built in. Because the new sail has more draft it is a nice down wind sail but does not point well. For the EC I will use my AI this year. I found a small nylon jib on E-Bay that I will use in down wind light air. |

I got my dimensions right off the boat. Stretched a rope from the mast attachment point to the bow. Then I estimated the leech and foot based on where I wanted the clew, slightly aft of the mast. Then I transferred it to the old sail that was larger than needed. I fit the sail triangle on the old main sail for the best cloth pattern. Make your dimensions slightly less than measured. The sail will stretch and the mast will bend. Other thing to remember is that the luff and leach can not be a straight line due to the sag. I used a long pice of molding as a batten to mark a slight inward curve. I thought he mentioned that you measure from bow to masthead, and then from bow to mast base, and then build in slight curvature in the luff and leach, making your dimensions slightly less than measured. They aren't numbers, but they seem pretty descriptive to me. I would add that you want the clew to be about 3 feet above the base of the mast to enable a fair lead for the sheet back to midships |

Is the tape to reduce the hull flex around the hatch opening when using your jib? |
