I've been looking around and thinking about creating a seat variation and noticed the moulded scoop on the starboard side - behind the seat area of my AI and wondered if it had a purpose and where it evolved from. As the area at the rear of the seat is lower than the gunwhales I was thinking about building up this area and attaching some padding as a back rest. I'm comitted to sitting as low as possible in the boat and using the moulded shape with a little padding to create a snug cockpit. I think my seating can be improved a little. Getting a wet bum doesn't faze me as it's part of sailing. A work in progress. |

I agree with tonystott, I think the reason that you aren't getting any responses is because we're not sure what you're talking about. Looking at this image from Hobie's website, I can't see what you're trying to point out. |

I'm photo intollerant so that's not happening - I'm refering to the area opposite the drink holder, same position on the starboard side. |

This area? I haven't got my AI anymore, so maybe someone with an AI has a clearer view or a better idea. Hope the image helps. |

That scooped out area is gone from the new model hulls Dave, so a lot of people won't know what you're referring to. |

Now that we know where it is, to answer your question, that's where the original rudder up/down lever was located in the first couple of years of the AI, before the up/down pulls were added.

Thanks Bob - so it was a combo rudder/cigar scoop. |

It has since been replaced with the new Twist/Lock cigar holders. Now they don't fall out even in the roughest seas. |
