I tow some friends on there other hobie model kayaks. It really slows you down. If the wind is blowing around 10 or so things are OK and you can get them someplace. Much faster wind and the towed kayaks get unstable. Make sure they pull up their drives and put in plugs. Forget about tacking upwind in a tight channel. They are better off peddling the shorter route.

done right, absolutely! if it's done wrong, however, you may have a disaster.

loaded or unloaded revo? if unloaded, a side tow may be an ideal option

loaded increases the difficulty and chances of breaking something important (like the rudder) or ripping the padeye out of the boat.

if i had to do it: i would tie to the forward xbar (or mast, but the furling eliminates that idea) route the line to the rear xbar and wrap once around the rear xbar and then to the tow. the towline would always be on the leeward side of the boat because the tow droop to leeward some and therefore will interfere with the working of the boat the least.

the towline should be either: very long, fairly elastic, fairly thin (low load limit). 1/4" nylon line is best (because it has about 6~8% elasticity and 1/4 to fit the load to the line). do not use spectra or dynasteel, they will not stretch and will jolt the tow and the towboat.

i would expect the boat to be difficult to steer and almost impossible to tack

Can it be done - Yes.

Is there good case for "mothershipping"?, (except an emergency)? - Not really.

I've picked up distressed tandem kayakers from time to time (tourists :roll: ), and towed them alongside my windward Ama for a mile or less. Having them jump on your tramp and grab hold of their yak works best, but you can leave them in theirs. We made headway upwind too, but it helped for me to pedal lightly.

If you are going to tow all the time, they do make 50' bungied towropes for watertoys that may work well. Strapping a REVO to the Akas would almost be a better idea.

According to Hobie, your mirage drive can out-tow 2 olympic padders in a tandem, so anyone with a REVO should really be able to hold their own without your help.

Would it not be better to raft up along side than tow? Not thought this through but just an idea.

In sheltered water yes, I think.

In open swells, we have towed AI's and Kayaks, which required a tow line. You need to keep the line AWAY from your rudder, or you may need a tow as well.

Again, I'd like to hear stupidjet's rational for towing - is it a healthy boat and kayaker?.
